1984 topps rack box

So I picked up a rack box of 1984 topps baseball Steve had at the bbce a few weeks ago. Finally got around to ripping. Started out great with one rack having the mattingly rookie on top! 23 racks later and no more mattinglys and no strawberrys. I didn't even come close to the complete set either. Oh well better luck next time. It was a fun rip though

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

Any Ryans? Those sell fairly well in 10 condition (80-125.00). PSA 10 Henderson will also be around 25.00-30.00ish.

  • That set is tough to complete by busting wax. At least for me. I've busted:
    2 wax boxes
    1 rack box
    1 cello box

    Still need about 15 cards.

792 cards in the '84 set. You'll likely have some remaining holes after a box or 2.

Glad you had fun ripping that rack box. Just curious if Mattingly was in the section furthest from the header section?

Do you collect mostly 80's stuff? Looking forward to your future posts.

Yeah, mostly 70's and 80's stuff. Would like to get a run of topps sets from 70-91 and upgrade key rookies to either grades 9 or 10. Also, the mattingly was in the cell furthest from the header. Has great centering and corners, really happy with it. Just need a good way to store it

Sounds like we collect the same stuff, but I just don't have the stomach to start the 1971 set yet. I've been able to finish all the major sets between 1973 and 1992 though. Almost done with the 1970 set and about 50% done with 1972.

Glad the Mattingly was in the furthest section from the header section as Topps would only load certain cards in certain sections and the 1984 Mattingly should always appear in that furthest section.

    Take care.

I noticed an 84T rack pack eBay auction that ended today with Mattingly in the center cell and Rod Carew at the end. I remember many threads on these boards saying which cells certain cards appear in and so I searched eBay under 1984 Topps rack Mattingly and sure enough, every other rack pack had him in the cell furthest from the header card. I stayed away from the auction. Always great knowledge to be gained here.

  • BBCE has one with a George Brett All-Star card, middle card is Ozzie Smith and the last card is Mattingly - $25. Ive been tempted but I feel there plenty of those out there and anyways, after almost 30 years of being produced, that less than $1 price rise for every year that has passed. I'll pass too but I sure would love a 84 Donruss Mattingly (showing on top) rack pack.
