Maine Ephemera


16. 1865 Sutler's pay warrant, 8th Maine Regiment, issued - The 8th Maine fought valiantly throughout the war.
During the period when this (and the next) warrant was issued, they were positioned in trenches near the James River,
around Richmond. They participated in the Appomattox Campaign in early April 1865, and were present at Appomattox Court
House when Lee surrendered. Actual war-era artifacts with a tangible connection to Maine units are very scarce. $265

18. 186_ Sutler's pay warrant, 23rd Maine Regiment, unissued - The 23rd Maine Infantry was organized in Portland, and
served from September 1862 through July 1863, primarily in the defense of Washington, D.C. - $50

20. 1898 Creamery receipt, "Capt. R.T. Emery", Belfast - Robert T. Emery was a noted Belfast Captain who sailed
some of the largest and best ships on the ocean during the Civil War era. In September 1863, while on a voyage from
Liverpool to San Francisco, his ship <i>Living Age</i> was captured by the Confederate cruiser <i>Tuscaloosa</i>, a vessel in Admiral
Semmes' fleet. Having been captured in possession of a neutral cargo bound for a neutral port, Emery was allowed to
continue his voyage, but only after paying a $160,000 ransom bond to the Confederates. - $45
