The PRO FOOTBALL Hall of Fame

I was enjoying the discussion in another thread about Herschel Walker/Bo Jackson/Barry Sanders and started thinking about the Football HOF. It's called the Pro Football Hall of Fame, so why is it they don't take other pro-football into consideration when choosing candidates? It's not the NFL Hall of Fame, so why are players like Herschel Walker and Doug Flutie not enshrined? If you add up Walker and Flutie's statistics and accomplishments from the USFL/CFL/NFL, they are clearly Hall-worthy. Just curious as to why they don't acknowledge USFL/CFL/XFL and whatever other PRO football leagues there have been.

  • It's a good point, the hockey hall of fame is much more inclusive. Tretiakand Kharlamov as examples.

How do you know that they haven't taken those stats into consideration during the selection process?

As for Flutie, I'm fairly certain the CFL has its own HOF, and he deserves to be enshrined there. I do not think he did anything HOF-worthy while playing in the NFL. The Pro Football HOF is based in America and (though not explicitly stated) appears to be focused on enshrining players of professional football in America. The following mission statement is from their website - "To educate the public regarding the origin, development and growth of professional football as an important part of American culture".

I agree on the CFL but if they do consider USFL stats Walker would be an excellent candidate to represent the USFL in the HOF.

The NFL counts stats from the AAFC and the AFL (they're ahead of the NBA, which churlishly doesn't recognize ABA stats) and the Pro Football HOF has guys who played in other non-NFL leagues from the early days, so I think counting USFL stats, especially for a guy like Herschel, is something they should consider.

As for the CFL, Southsider is right, they have a specifically CFL Hall.

Exactly right about it being the hockey HOF and not the NHL HOF

Also worth mentioning as players inducted who are not NHL'ers, don't forget Cammi Granato image

Im not familiar with the CFL, is the game similar to the NFL or more like arena football?
If its more like arena, they shouldnt consider it, its a different game.

Herschel Walker had a lengthy NFL career in which he showed that he was a good running back, but certainly not great or HOF worthy. You could make a greater HOF argument for Flutie given that his biggest body of professional work was outside the NFL. He's an interesting candidate.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Basketball hof even considers college. Woman are now allowed in and WNBA players are now the leading woman hof
candidates. It's not the NBA hof...as they have a automatic induction of ABA players from that committee as well as international...ect.

    Its a world hof.

CFL is a slightly diff game. It has its own HOF. Flutie is already enshrined as a 5X MVP I belive and rated best CFL player ever #1.

(I don't agree with the list) BTW his brother Darren is #50 in the top 50 all time list. They call them bookends. Flutie is an athlete that made 100%
utilization of his talents. Remember he was a heisman winner and famous for the Boston college championship 'hail mary' pass.

However he did play for NFL teams and wasn't considered beyond good. On the other hand Warren Moon is enshrined in both hof's.

Hockey HOF elects members rom int'l teams as well. Most recently woman are elected.

I still don't see Satahara Oh in the baseball HOF.....so its like the FB hall.
