1980 Topps Baseball Wax Pack Rip...and a Vending Box

Hey guys - figured I have run the gamut of pack ripping so thought I would turn to 1980 Topps for my fix this time. Hoping for some nice Ryans and Hendersons.

Setting up this thread now and getting the packs from BBCE tomorrow. Will post results!

Good luck to you sir! Remember to save the wrappers and gum!
  • NikklosNikklos Posts: 1,411 ✭✭✭
I don't even like to touch that gum! The older, the grosser.

But the wrappers - I have saved every one since I was a kid. And I saved them with the thought that "one day people may want these". Boy how right I was!

So my 15 1980 packs arrived. Most of them smelled like they'd been dunked in water around 1983. And the gum, man, nobody would want to buy this gum...No Hendersons, no Ryans. Yet all was not lost. Some highlights.

  • Those cards look pretty nice considering what that pack looked like. BBCE sells stuff like that?? Kind of surpising

This is my favorite set of all time. It's fun ripping those packs/boxes....getting pricier and pricier though. I ripped a bunch of it 4-5 years ago. Let me know if you need any high end singles for a set.
  • Thanks for sharing...I like the Ozzie "swinging with my eyes shut" pic. It is still hard for me to think of these cards as expensive and increasingly htf

That Brett was my favorite card to pull back in 1980 as a kid....just something unique about the perfectly centered profile pic of Brett along with the "A.L. All Star" color combo banner. Next was the George Foster card, again with the "N.L. All Star" banner and the overall color combo on the card...plus Foster just looked like a really "bad" dude in the pic.

Thought I deserved better on some. Wasn't too familiar on how 1980 graded out so sent a small sub. Pretty tough. I received more 8.5s on this sub than in my previous five combined. That alone speaks volumes about the subjectivity of grading and the grader. Plan to sub more 1980s ASAP.

1980 is a tough issue. That said, a stricter grader is often the difference between the 8.5 and the 9, or even between the 9 and 10. I do think the Brett is accurately graded, though.

Sorry about the results. 1980 is very tough. If you don't understand the nuances of each card, it can be quite a challenge as well as a money loosing proposition.

I just looked at the cards that you had provided photos for and most of them seem to be properly graded. Please post scans if you can rather than photos when they return. Scans of the backs of the cards would help as well.

The Molitor looks good, but the back scan will be the tell tale on that one.
The Carlton looks fine at first glance, but the registration is off on that card.
Ron Jackson has black snow or staining in the top white border. Can't tell from the photo.
Fingers has blue in the Padres logo which dropped it. Also seems to have a very small wax stain on the right border?
Brett is off a little too much L-R.
Smith looks like it's chipped just a tad and dinged maybe once. They are very tough on this card (it has a less than 2% success rate - lower than Brett's 3%), so make sure you submit dead centered (front and back) non-chipped or dinged Ozzie cards.
Tippy is dinged and has too much PD in the banner logo, unless that's light due to wax/gum residue.
Based on the scans, I don't have enough info. on the Ryan, Griffey, or Pedro. I'd check surface and back centering for rear tilt (which is very common for this set unfortunately).
Your Murphys are off registration wise in the banner logos - I would not sub those.
The Bench looks slightly low on the front (which is fairly common), what does it look like on the back?
The Dwight Evans is very tough, no 10s exist of that card yet. I'm hoping to change that in one of my submissions leaving today. image

Agree on the Brett, Grote. But admit I thought Ozzie, Molitor and Fingers were locks on 10s. And still do. I probably over graded (in my mind) the 8s and the 7. It was good learning though on 1980 grading.

Thanks For the info Justin. I did whittle down the cards I posted to the 10 submitted. It was a shame to pass on the Murphy's because I love that card.

If I overlooked the blue on the Fingers, it is good learning for next sub.

On any given day, depending on the grader, the Molitor and Ozzie 10.

Looking for more 1980 product to capitalize on the learning. At least you could say I am judicious with what I sub out of the material I am dealt!

I will offer my advice regarding the growing debate on this forum. If you either:

    a) fear not recouping your money, or

    b) would be happy to sit on the vending box for 5-10 years so it may appreciate $100 (or not);

DO NOT OPEN YOUR VENDING BOXES!

And I say this knowing full well the contents of this particular box from this particular case.

It could really go either way.

I bought a box last year, the corners were as expected and I wasn't happy with the centering on most of the cards except one...the Rickey Henderson....I was shocked at the corners and centering when compared to the rest of the box.....I'm sure it's a PSA 9 but it'll have to wait for grading next year.

Corners were, for the most part, strong. About the same as you might find in your average wax box. Centering could have been better. Consistently brutal for a long stretch, reversed gears - producing some nice cards - but never really hit that perfect stride.
