1980-81 topps basketball set

How do you know what #1 card is and so on since the cards are so grouped in 3s? Maybe I am missing something but I cant figure it out. They have 3 numbers on each card.

    Just get the 1 with Dr J, Magic, and Bird. No one really cares about the other ones.

    Most people use this to sort the cards instead of messing with the numbers.

    VCP has the in alphabetical order by player on 1st panel, followed by player on 2nd, followed by the 3rd. Make it REALLY confusing not having the registry and VCP the same, much less trying to find the cards listed on ebay by anything other than "best" name on the card.
