1980 Topps Question

What's the deal with graded Topps cards that don't have the puck blacked out. I would think that they couldn't get higher than a PSA 2 with any of the black coating missing since that's the way they came from the factory.

  • Doesn't seem to matter whether the black is scratched off or not. I agree with you, I think scratched should be knocked down a few pegs.
  • I think the black scratched off is worse than paper loss. I'm going to call PSA about this since this is one of the sets I collect.
  • Those are all old labels, my guess is they have changed how they grade that set. And I agree that scratched off should be a huge downgrade.
  • I just talked to PSA. They haven't changed how they have graded this set. Since the black label was intended to be scratched off, it can be graded that way without penalty as long as the card surface wasn't damaged by the scratching process. As a 1980 Topps collector, I would be very disappointed with any 9's or 10's that didn't have the black puck. It's counterintuitive that scratching a card's surface doesn't cause a penalty especially when they are so tough on surface issues.
