A tale of two Mining Thalers

Recently I showed a recent acquisition from Brunswick-Woffenbuttel. It's Dav-2157, ruler Karl I, and the coin's subject is the White Swan Mine. That piece graded MS62 by PCGS.

But, as I was entering that coin into my spreadsheet, I discovered I had another mining thaler from Brunswick-Woffenbuttel (also 1752-IBH). This one is Dav-2166, and depicts the Rainbow Mine. That piece is also graded MS62 by PCGS.

As you can see from my pictures, the newer piece has a much nicer strike. (BTW, the Dav-2166 is much nicer in hand than the image suggests.)

Apparently one has to be a "member" to look at photos.

Thanks for the bump, Zohar. I miss seeing these two old friends, being held in my SDB.

It's a shame that they're so darn hard to find fully struck. But in spite of their imperfections, I really like these two coins. The top coin is minimally toned, sort of like light tissue paper toning. It's not fresh white like a typical Morgan. The bottom piece typifies originality and is free of notable marks.

A most excellent bump, considering today's comments activity.

When I see beautiful artwork such as these, I am truly baffled as to why some collectors limit themselves to mere "American" coins.
