Does anyone know any coin dealers or coin shops in Dublin (Ireland)?

Going on vacation this month for a little R and R and would love to look for coins.

Any one know of any good spots to check out?

    No, but I know a vaudeville joke about Ireland and money.

    Ike: "Mike, do you know what's the richest country in the world?"

    Mike: "I don't know, Ike. What is the richest country in the world?"

    Ike: "Ireland --- because its capital's been Dublin for years!"

    I was in Ireland for two weeks during the summer of 2006. We rented a 46' cabin cruiser and sailed up the River Shannon, from Portumna in the south all the way up to Northern Ireland. It is a beautiful country, with very friendly people, and I highly recommend it.

    I hope you have better luck than I did, however, in finding coin dealers. Everyone we asked about coin dealers just stared at us in astonishment, as they didn't seem to have any concept of coin collecting or numismatics. Even antique dealers had no idea where we might find a coin dealer. Even in Dublin, which is a very large city, no one could direct us to even one coin dealer or shop. We had to occupy ourselves with the Guinness brewery, which of course was no problem.

    One tip that you might want to know before heading to Ireland. I did not exchange and US dollars to Euros before I left, opting to make the exchange in Ireland when I got there. The Irish banks would not accept, exchange, or even touch US $100 bills, as they said they had problems with counterfeits; no Irish bank would touch them. The largest denomination they would exchange was the $50, and of course I had a pocket full of $100. The day was saved when we learned that credit unions would exchange the $100, and there were nearly as many credit unions as banks. Handy information to know when visiting the Emerald Isle.

    Thanks. Will probably just withdraw euros from my checking account and deals with the lousy fees and conversion rate when I return.

    Got a few leads on the internet on coin dealers but I stress a few...

    One of my nieces is married to a fellow from Ireland. I could ask him , but I'm not sure he knows what a numismatist is. imageimage

    In all honesty Ireland is not a numismatic treasureland compared to other countries in that general area.

    There are a couple of decent coin shows in Dublin, but your timing isn't right for those. You might, however, check out one of these:

    My wife and I were in Dublin in Sep, 1997 and I bought an 1872 ddo shield nickel (yes, USA) for $14 in a coin store in Dublin. The owner wasn't the most outgoing type of person but I was able to look at some coins. We were in Dublin again in Sep 2011 on a Sunday and most shops were closed so I was not able to check on the coin store. It appeared to still be there and in business. Not sure of the address, but it was between O’Connell Street and Marlborough Street about a block or two south of Saint Mary's Pro-Cathedral on Marlborough St.

    There's a pretty good web site for modern Irish coins that can surprise at how high many of these are;

    Site.

    Here's an old post by "Exit" on another board;

    "Bygone Days, Arcade Market, Georges St.
    The Collector Den, Powerscourt SC
    The Collectors Shop, Blackrock Market, Main St
    Cultural Collection of Ireland, Fitzwilliam Square
    and then a bloke called Mike Kelly with just a phone number."

    The popularity of coin collecting has increased significantly in Ireland in the last
    decade and I'd be surprised if you can't find more. Sometimes these foreign sources
    can be little more than kiosks or holes in the wall though.

    It was funny that I contacted the gent behind this website. He told me that most of his coins he acquires are from the UK and the US and that the coin collector base in Ireland is pretty small. Still will be checking out all of your suggestions, folks. Thanks for the input! Much appreciated.

    No I don`t have any suggestions for coin shops in Ireland...

    BUT, I will suggest that you just enjoy the wonderful Emerald Isle as I did for 9 days back in 2002. Started in Dublin, worked my way around the South Coast including the Ring of Kerry and much much more. Ended in Shannon for our trip back home. What a great time!

    Take a short break from coins and enjoy your surroundingsimage
