best scanner for shiny stuff?

My scanner, while it produces very clear and crisp images of the cards, tends to make chrome, refractors, and foil enhancements on cards look way too dark.

Which scanners have folks found to properly capture the "shiny" quality of cards?

  • Depending on which scanner you're using there should be a way to tweak settings such as brightness, ect. I would consult your user manual.

Agreed, you just have to play with the settings until you get it right. It doesnt matter what scanner you use.

I've already gone the "RTFM" route. Thanks. The scanner doesn't handle any kind of reflective surface well. Outside of heavy image manipulation in Photoshop, it just won't work with my scanner (HP Scanjet 3970).

Example: The silver foil on this card is showing up as dark gray (almost black). Contrast and brightness have been tweaked, and while it brings out the colors, it does nothing for the foil.

  • We had a similar problem when we switched from windows XP to windows 7. My wife is the computer expert in our family and managed to fix it. Maybe consult a computer repair shop, I do recall Staples wasnt much help.
  • On 2nd thought, I think that's how our scans look on similar cards, I dont think any of them do well with foil.

It's not the OS. I've used this scanner with WinXP and Win7 and they look the same.

I've worked in IT for almost 15 years now. My own exhaustive troubleshooting on this issue has brought me to a confident conclusion that this isn't a computer or a settings issue. That's why I wasn't asking how to fix this scanner or what settings to use, I'm asking if anyone has a scanner that handles shiny cards well.

  • Any scanner that illuminates the surface of the card will be an issue on foil and chrome cards.
Not sure it's an issue assuming the surface perfection or imperfections are evident.
    IMO
