Hurrah!!! I won the ugliest coin at Heritage Tonight

And I'm really happy about it. A 1690 (second bust) tin halfpenny in NGC45, it's a pretty expensive coin for me to be buying but it's probably the finest I could ever hope to afford so I emptied out the piggybank. I've been looking for years for one with decent details that I could afford, I had one several years ago that would have been about a VG but eventually traded it away because I just couldn't love it. The problem was the tin, it just corrodes away to nothing really quickly, the most common variety of the 1690 is rated very rare by Peck, with the least common of the five varieties being rated exceedingly rare. This is the only 1690 graded at NGC.

Nice piece Jeff. How did the GB pieces do relative to estimates?

It was mixed I thought, as was the German States. I won this, and a couple of decent German States pieces, at or below low estimate, and the super-grade stuff went really high. I think the MS68 Vicky 6d went for around $3800 with the juice.

Pretty much in line with the condition rarities (slight price creep) of the past 3 years.

To me, the "Parking Lot Una" was a shocker. Wondering what a solid PF64CAM or better would bring in this current atmosphere?

That ain't so ugly. Matter o' fact, it's got some brightness to the tin in the lower, protected parts of the design, and that sets up a nice contrast.

I agree with Jeff about the GB stuff. Buyers seem either not to know or not to appreciate some differences, and seem to throw money at grades like the mentioned 1853 6d - I kind of like it when potential competition blows itself up on these bits & wonder how an MS68 is worth three or more times an MS66+. I also marvel how a butt-common date like this would go for twice what an MS66 1889 small head shilling (their last sale) would go for. Who buys this stuff?

In the short run of proof 6ds, they basically all went for the same price despite a coin like the 1946 being much more rare than the next 1947 lot, etc.

The Una and Lion went for 90k plus the juice and was not slabbed - hairlines? I really do not get coins like the "regular" proof golds of the 1820s and 1830s going for such crazy prices; I mean it seems if you want an 1826 5L, they are essentially ALWAYS available & same with an 1831 proof 2L, etc.

I think there are buys out there, just be careful.

Nice looking coin. Why the copper plug?
  • JCMhoustonJCMhouston Posts: 5,306 ✭✭✭
The copper plugs were to add a bit of actual metal value I believe.

Interesting tidbit! Anyone else think from the title this was going to be about a Churchill crown? image

It might be ugly to some, but that is actually one of the nicer examples I have ever seen.

JCM, check your nice ha'penny against Cooke's collection Tin issues starting at lot 635.

Maybe it has the CC provenance.
