FOR SALE - Large Football Card Collection late 70s - mid 80s)

Hello All,

I'm new here and trying to sell my football collection I compiled in my youth during the mid 80s. Forgive me for any newbie/novice mistakes (it's been awhile since I have been in the "card game"). The collection is some what extensive and by my research, might be worth decent money (?). I do not have a Beckett's guide or membership but relied on a free site that used price averages (http://footballcardspriceguide.com/). I estimate the cards to be anywhere from very good to near mint (+/-) for the most part (I took care of them as a kid). I'd love to be able to sell the entire lot to one buyer (at a discount) but would be willing to piece out the better cards if need be. I'd also like to sell to a private collector (honestly, I know I can get a better price that way and I think they would appreciate them more). I have listed the highlights of what I have below. Please let me know if my prices are way off (high or low). Feel free contact me if you have interest or need more information.

  • You really need a more detailed discription of the cards and their grades as well as scans. Especially any of the Key Stars and Rookies( Marino, Elway, Fouts, Blount Etc..)

A site unseen description like this is unlikely to prompt any serious offers.

    Just sayin

    Welcome!

Unfortunately, Corncobb is right, its going to take a lot of scans of the key cards or someone able to view the collection in person to entertain serious offers. Where are you located?

I'd strongly recommend using eBay's completed auctions listings to look up the sales of the High-End items. As an example, for the 1972 Staubach RC, which you show as BV of $120, Ebay 1972 Staubach completed auctions, you can see that raw cards (pending conditon), might sell for $20-$50.

So, as a rough estimate, 20-40% of Book Value MIGHT be fair for the key cards, the lower stuff is likely 'dollar a dozen' unless its truly sharp condition.
Looking to have some custom cuts or plain custom cards built? PM me.

These guys are right. Scans are a must for any of the cards you have listed at $10 and up. They are the bread and butter of your price. The minor stars and commons from those years do not drive a huge demand due to their regular availability. The 1979 set can command the price you are looking for but to do that the Lofton, Campbell and Staubach have to be dead centered and crisp corners. It is a great set but only two cards drive the value. If the Campbell and Lofton have centering less then 55/45 your value will drop to around 100-$110

See if you can turn on the Private Message feature on your account.

As a collector of 35 years myself, I can tell you that what has changed the most in your time away from the hobby is the attention paid to the condition of each card. I remember well the days of looking at the Beckett and seeing what the price of each card was, and knowing that if you owned the card corresponding to the price guide, you could expect a similar value. Third party grading has changed all of that, in many ways for the better.

However, and unfortunately, it usually means that people who return to the hobby after time away are guilty of (at least initially) overgrading their cards' condition. The previous post was correct. Use eBay to check what similar items have sold for, and examine and compare the condition of the individual cards. This will give you a realistic idea of what your cards are worth.

Welcome to the boards! If you hang around a while you will be able to re-learn quite a lot. If you get your Private Message feature going, feel free to PM me with any questions...
