i watched this auction close without a bid. the CU pricing starts at MS65DCAM for $1200 but nothing at a lower grade. any opinion on a reasonable price? thanks.

i just have so much fun trying to get a link up!!! the coin looked OK. a little haze in the fields opposite kennedy's nose and a starting bid of $249. i'll try to post the link again but it's probably "no longer available."

I can't get the image to load. I'm curious as to what keeps it in a 64 holder. That's an unusually low grade for a Kenendy SMS (regardless of the full DCAM).

Scan isn't big enough to grade, but there is some toning/haze on the obverse, and looks like the reverse strike could be weak in the shield and tailfeathers. Last proof 64 Kennedy I had had about half a dozen small hairlines around the lower parts of the date.

  • Part of the reason must be even in lower grades this coin is rare in DCAM. There are only 23 total coins graded in DCAM listed as follows.

    64 DCAM 2
    65 DCAM 8
    66 DCAM 6
    67 DCAM 7

There was one on e-bay listed in 67 DCAM by Rick of R&I coins the last bid I saw was around 3800.00, I dont konw if it met reserve or sold. I think 1200.00 is reasonable in 65 DCAM for that coin. The 1965 is one of the hardest coins in high grade in MS and SMS to find. Mint state examples dont show up that offten either.I dont think the price is too far out of line for starting at 1200 for a DCAM 65. The DCAM 64 600-800

i would have bid on it but was unsure of a value, though $250 seemed low considering it's a 1965. i'd bought from the seller before so after auction close i e-mailed to enquire about the coin. already sold to a dealer. i know cmeyer is doing some upgrading now. he said he'd tell the dealer of my interest so maybe i'll here from him. thanks for the opinions on a price.image

hey rella---how did you fix the link? PM and get me straight cause i just can't seem to get this stuff right. newbie-itis i guess!imageimageimage

Again, tough to tell by the scan, but does the reverse truly look DCAM (even for the 1965 SMS- being more generous because of the date)? It appears low end of the DCAM scale to me. I think I'd rather just slam another couple, three hundred dollars into one that is black and white and a SMS65+.

  • At that price I'm suprised nobody grabbed it! Then again on what I use for searches on ebay it never popped up so maybe the listing didn't get a lot of exposure during the auction and people not interested in SMS coins may have been thinking $249 for a 64DCAM(?) .......... lot of money for a low grade......... the 1965 was by far the poorest quality SMS Kennedy and probably the most difficult to grade. And yes Braddick, I have no doubt the graders are a little more lenient with the 1965 than the 66 & 67. Most people (by my experience) have a difficult time telling a SMS CAM/DCAM from a non-cameo - you'll find dealers and collectors hype them online as incorrectly graded........ "shoulda been a CAM", "incredible deep cameo contrast but not designated".......... what I think they are seeing is a "cameo with a cameo background"......... it's just the way the coins were minted....... to find one with with decent mirrors and any cameo contrast is the exception and then the few that did were usually pretty dinged up from dropping into the bins. Unless you've seen a number of high-quality 1965 SMS Kennedys, both cameo and non-cameo it's kind of difficult to really understand what you're looking for/at. The quality of the 1966 improved and the 1967 improved dramatically and are much easier to grade. Keets - if you get a chance to buy it from it's new owner I'd do it...... unless he wants a grand for it. If your coin budget allows I wouldn't even blink at paying $600...... of course we're not all made of money and we may want to "enjoy" more than one coin. BTW the 1965 67DCAM R&I has on ebay was listed before and is on his website - if I recall it was listed at $10,500.
    ahhhh....... SODO MELVIN?????

oh osiris, i'm doin a little ho-hummin' now that i watched and didn't bid. it was viewed 100+ times, so it was noticed. and i'm painfully aware of the shortness of 65's. i guess it's like a friend says--"If he who hesitates is lost, but good things come to him who waits, what the hell am I supposed to do!"--i got hung up in the middle. drat! holding out now for an e-mail and a shot. image
