Check out The Wonder Years "Odd Man Out" episode for a MAJOR baseball card goof

I [originally couldn't] find a YouTube video or clip of the episode, but in The Wonder Years episode called "Odd Man Out", Kevin Arnold is shown holding a whole handful of 1989 Topps baseball cards. So what's the big deal you may ask? The episode takes place in 1969. Oops.

So did Kevin have a Deloran in that garage and time travel 20 years into the future or something???

At last; the YouTube video; check out Kevin's "cards from the future" starting at 7:30

  • Maybe they started printing the 1989s back then and never stopped? I think in Big they used 1987 Topps but didn't say the year and of course, no time travel involved.

Here's part of it, but it's poor quality. I can't really make out the cards.

Did they show actual 1989 Topps cards, or fake cards that were designed like 1989 Topps? If it's the former, then I really wouldn't really call it a goof - they were just being lazy. Since they were talking about the cards of 1969 players (Tiant, Marichal, and McCovey) in the scene, then they had to know that they weren't using the right cards.

Actually the scene where Kevin is holding up the fistful of 1989 Topps comes shortly after that scene. In the scene you showed, Paul is in fact holding a correct 1969 card and in other baseball card scenes thus far they did in fact show the appropriate 1967-69 cards from that era.

But right after that clip you showed though, Kevin clearly borrowed the Deloran in the garage... image

They probably didn't want Kevin (Fred Savage) to toss around vintage cards for that scene, so they used some modern junk.

  • My favorite baseball card goof was from the Goonie's movie. Chester Copperpot was suppose to have gone missing in the thirties but they find a 1976 Topps Lou Gehrig card in his wallet. Only a kid obsessed by baseball and in the middle of the card boom of the eighties could pick up on that one though!

Unsolved Mysteries episode #205 (season 7, aired 10/28/1994 in a segment called "Gordon Page Jr", at 29:55 (from Amazon Prime) it shows him making a pyramid out of baseball cards as a child in the early 1970s (he was born in 1963). He's shown holding a period appropriate 1972 Topps card...but then shows 1987 Topps cards in that pyramid! Yet another baseball card collector time traveler!!

At the end of that episode, it originally showed Kevin on Ebay bidding on a Mike Trout rookie auto, but they edited it out. You gotta love good ol' american television.
