1780 Austria Thaler Restrike info?

Hey all,

I was digging through some of the items I already had in my world stash and found this 1780 Austria Thaler (which I assume is a restrike). The edge of this coin reads "IUSTITIA ET CLEMENTIA" which I take to mean Justice and Mercy / Forgiveness. From what I've read so far it appears this coin may have been one of the most successful trade coins ever produced. After the originals were produced in 1780 many countries including Austria, Great Britain, and even the U.S. created restrikes as these coins continued to be used as a store of value and instrument of trade in many areas of europe and the middle east up until the 1980's and perhaps the present day.

What I would very much like to learn is if there is any way to tell from looking at the coins when and where such restrikes were made.

Is there a reference or anyone's specialized knowledge that would shed more light on this?

Thank you,

  • Spot on! Thanks again, Zohar.

Based on that guide it looks like mine was made in London 1936-1961.

  • As a followup question: If the coin in question was minted in London or Bombay would that be a "1780 Austria Thaler KM-T1" as it appears in the Krause catalog as a restrike under Austria trade coins or would it be "(1780) Thaler Restrike". Both apparently can appear on PCGS labels, but I am confused as to what difference, if any, there is.

    Thanks
