Assessing a card's grade with minor "paper loss"

So this card has a small chip to the left of the player's brim of the hat, as well as some other chipping under the brim of the hat. It basically looks like there were surface bubbles and were scratched off. What kind of grade does that leave the card in?

From my experience, any paper loss generally crushes the grade -- usually to PSA A or 1.

Your example is not the normal type of paper loss (most I see appear the result of tape or glue) so it's hard to say.

My guess is that is a PSA 3 at best.

My guess would be a PSA 2

  • It is my understanding that if PSA determines that a card has paper loss, it can grade no higher than a 2.

I bought a nice T206 Mathewson: PSA 2. TINY paper loss on the back.
The front is beautiful. 5 or better front & corners. Nice card @ a discounted price.

This is my understanding as well. I've had to remove a ton of cards from albums and no matter how minty they look on the front if there's even a pinhead speck of paper loss the ceiling has always been 2.

This is my understanding also. I think that's crazy, but it doesn't matter what I think!

I actually like it. I've been able to get some absolute blazers for a song because a pinhead size of paper loss kept the technical grade at 2 and the cost way down. I'm all for it.

From that point of view I agree 100%. HOWEVER, back in the pre grading days, that card might sell for 1 or 2 condition grades less ... NOT as much as 6 or 7. I just think its crazy to lower the grade by so much.

  • So, per the responses, would I be safe listing the card as Good (PSA 2 quality) on ebay? The rest of the card displays as VG-EX+. Thanks for all the replies BTW!
