Newbie here, just wondering....

Do people buy graded cards from other companies then open the slab and submit to PSA?

Thanks,
Doug

    Thread

Here is a thread I started with a link to a video I made showing what I feel is the most effective way to crack open a BGS slab. You can use this method on any third party graded holder.

It can be very risky at times but also rewarding. If you are new to grading I would say get comfortable with how PSA grades cards before you rush out and try the crack and resub game. There can be quite a bit of heartache if you are not carefull.

  • Thanks everyone. I am new to graded cards, but I am hooked! LOL

Great video! But I am a long way from doing that! I'm still green around the ears, lol

  • I know this question is hard to answer, but what do you guys think your success rate is in breaking other third party grades?

40% or less. Even lower on star cards.

For the most part I am no longer even trying.

Yes, this is common practice. Be careful with your own expectation setting, though. Different grading companies have different grading standards.

My personal experience has probably been a 25% crossover rate. My two biggest disappointments have been 1) a 77 Topps Carew graded BGS 9.5 that i paid $100 for come back Min Size Req and a 77 Garvey graded SGC 96 come back a 5.

LOL Yeah that could be it!
  • Its best to leave them in the holders.

IMO, your chances of crossing over are drastically reduced if you don't crack them out.
  • I recently had some success with crackouts from grading companies that I had never heard of before:

It depends on the card for me...crack or submit straight. My results for straight slab crossover is pretty good, around 70% but I scrutinize heavily before buying and submitting.

Cracking will usually yield the most objective opinion, though.

You can submit in a slab? What does PSA do, put their sticker om?

They will pull the card out of the old slab and put it into a PSA slab. How they open the slabs from Beckett, SGC, etc., I don't know, but I know they do it safely.

I think you are right. I mostly deal in 70s cards but I can see where a review might be okay for a lot of cards (especially for more modern cards).
