Ripped Some 80s OPC Basesball Wax

Was ugly outside yesterday so drove into the city and hit a card shop I'd never been to before. The owner had some 80s wax. I bought 3 boxes of whar he labeled as 86 Topps, and a box of what he had as 84 OPC. The 86 turned out to be OPC (at 8 bucks a box) and the 84 was in fact 85. Also bought 8 boxes of 89 Dounruss looking for Griffeys. I'll never make that mistake again, it was more like work than play opening the Donrus.

I ripped it all yesterday and am picking through it today. I set aside the obvious cards - HOF's from the 85 and 86 cards and the Griffey, Johnson and Shilling from 89. The 80s OPC were in great shape, lots of real clean cards. Was very suprised at the centering in all 4 boxes, it's better than the 88 set I put together as a kid. Hit a clean but OC Puckett in the first pack of 85 I cracked, Got lots of HOF's from the 86 OPC as well.

As I sort today is there any particular cards I should be looking for? POP reports on both 80s sets are very low, would it make sense to look for common 10s?

  • Nice pick up on the OPC. The 85 has a Puckett rookie and generally a better set IMO than 84.
  • A few of the 85s:

I wouldnt bother sending in commons in on those years. Any 9 and you most likely lose money. Key player cards dont do very well either.
I would send in Pucketts in 9 or better quality. Another key from 1986 would be a Sandberg if you could pull a 10!
Check pop reports on the stars and completed auctions but unless you get 10's, its a waste

Looks like all those cards are a bit diamond cut

yeah thats what I was noticing. At first glance they look well centered, but upon seeing it, its tilted.
  • Ya I didn't really notice that until the scans. I checked PSA grading standards and no mention of how they downgrade diamond cut, wonder what the penalty is?

Puckett may get a 9 if its clean. I would send in the others

The penalty ends up being spending $7 for a stab that you can sell for $4. I'm not trying to be a downer, but I wouldn't bother submitting any of the cards you've scanned here.

I think that's bad advice. Nothing here is going to increase in value by more than $7 if it's graded.
  • OK great, thanks for the advice. Will post some 86s for feedback this afternoon, got a number of Sandbergs that look good at first glance.

Agreed. Don't waste the money on the slabs for those cards. Enjoy the low cost rip and save the cards as they are. The Puckett in a 9 will get you 25.00 but I think you have closer to an 8 there if that which after the hamer price will be 10.00-12.00. Not worth the grading fee and shipping to PSA or time invested.

  • I don't sell cards so it's not a big deal. Probably will submit the best few I get from all boxes for my collection. Puckett was one of my favourite players growing up so it's going in a slab for sure at some point.

I agree and thats why I wouldnt grade any commons and even most of the stars. 9's on most lose money.
I still say if the Puckett is crisp it has a shot at a 9 but its almost not even worth trying.

Gotcha, that's good advice as well. I have a lot of hockey that needs to get submitted so may not end up submitting any of these cards other than the Puckett.

I do find it strange that with such low POPS the OPC cards don't have a market. There are only 220 OPC Pucketts in PSA slabs, 550 for Tiffany, and over 5,000 for the regular Topps issue including 2800 PSA 8's.

Unfortunately no, got 2 but they are both 70/30 LR and cut pretty rough.

Half the problem is centering. Most of the time you wont find key cards centered and no one wants to send in cards that are o/c knowing they dont have a shot at a 10

  • Here are a few of the 86's. There is no 10 for Carlton or Sandberg. My Sandberg's are't tens for sure

I phoned PSA about this because some of my OPC 10's were diamond cut. I was told that the graders allowed this for OPC only. I collect hockey and didn't specifically ask about baseball though I suspect that they would allow some degree of it even for a 10.
