My goodness that PWCC Johnny Bench RC just went for $1885

SMR of $850, I remember seeing a few recent BIN for around $1100. Unbelievable some of the prices PWCC is getting.

Yes. It's shocking how consignors are able to get higher prices realized ("realized" for the most part) than owners.

I'm beginning to think that Dimitri Young may be buying back some of the 10s he sold as 9s...that would help explain the atomic bids on these cards..

    That's certainly one explanation.

I've get to meet a single collector who will explain to me why they'll pay a 35% (or higher) premium just to buy from a particular seller. Until someone explains that to me I'll remain highly skeptical of these hammer prices.

And FWIW, I have no issues whatsoever with shilling- in fact, I think more sellers should do it. So I'm not passing moral judgment here; I'm just questioning the legitimacy of the sale(s).
  • Makes no sense a 82 ripken fleer just went for 590 when 4sharpcorners has the same psa 10 listed for 475. May need to change the name to PWSC (Pre War Shill Collector).

Yes. So far as I can tell a shill bid is nothing more than a hidden reserve. Which means the net effect is that a) more cards come to auction, and b) EBay collects fewer hobby dollars, since the the sellers who are running de facto reserve auctions aren't forced to pay the extra money that comes from running an auction with an announced reserve.

Well, maybe not Young, but perhaps there are new participants in the market that are driving the price surge in a way that is similar to Young's impact several years ago when he used CBailey to buy up all the RC PSA 9's he could get his hands on. Here's the VCP data on the Bench:
    4/5/13 eBay Auction | Image prewarcardcollector h***h 19 $1,885.00
    12/9/12 eBay Listing | Image www.707sportscards.com 3***r BIN $1,100.00
    10/21/12 eBay Auction | Image sundiegocollectibles f***s 23 $843.44

On another thread MBMiller noted the spike in the Schmidt RC 9, Here's the VCP data:
    4/5/13 eBay Auction | Image prewarcardcollector n***n 23 $1,780.88
    4/5/13 eBay Auction | Image prewarcardcollector n***n 31 $2,024.99
    2/17/13 eBay Auction | Image affluenzafree n***n 31 $1,375.00
    2/8/13 eBay Auction | Image prewarcardcollector h***h 23 $1,800.00

Note h***h was a buyer of both cards and helped spike the price of both. h***h has a feedback of 105 so maybe he's a new buyer. Perhaps its a coincidence. I am not about to try and chase down an individual's buying history on VCP. As to the Schmidt card, notice that the last 3 sales have all been to the same buyer. Given the sheer number of new record prices being posted, even for a low grade 68 Clemente as was mentioned earlier in another thread, I think one can discard the notion that there is some kind of massive shilling effort under way. I think one can conclude that demand is picking up and that is driving price upward.
Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all "right-thinking" people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.

This is known as “bad luck.”

I think another possible factor is the age of the buyers. I was born in 1975 and turned 38 this year. I have more "disposable" income right now than I have ever had before, and I think guys my age (35-45) are in a similar boat. We grew up in the 80's and were burned by the early 90's cards, and now we are back wanting sets from our birth years, key cards of people we saw play, etc.

Shill bidding is almost always fraudulent and illegal. As long as you are comfortable with that then full speed ahead. Reserves are not illegal.

I just won an auction from PWCC tonight that sold for about 60% less than it should have, so I guess it's all about what you're aiming for. image
