Vatican coins are very nice, especially those of 1929-1941, which are in my opinion some of the best the world had to offer from that time period.

I have never purchased a Vatican coin, I have passed on them countless times. I can't pinpoint the reason but I suspect it's because I don't collect "Jesus on coins" or "coins of Christianity" or "coins of the bible" etc. etc.

I will probably buy one at some point for my OFEC set but I have yet to meet "the one."

The reverses of Pius XI (and first 3 years of Pius XII) are really classic and leverage older papal designs or statues in the Vatican museum. I have a boxed 1929 set and maybe another and a bunch of odds of this period, mostly AR and AV where I'm building date sets. Nice looking coins and many even circulated for a while. Altho I specialize in medals and much earlier coins I've started to look at some of the later coins as well, esp Paul & after. Some are awful but I found that many of them are well executed and often tell a story. Not classics, but still fairly cheap and worth picking up if you like the designs.

BTW, I think the 5 euro 2005 Sede Vacante, following the death of John Paul II, is a very attractive contemporary coin. Glad I bought mine at the time since the price has gone up a lot (photo not mine, but I do have one of these somewhere).

This one is not as nice as the rest shown here but the price was right! I got it in one of those "coins by the pound" lots many years ago. Seems the mintages on these can be quite low?

That L10 1948 coin is amazing. Obviously did what coins are supposed to do - circulate - and getting it from poundage is even better. I was only in Rome once, pre euro, and was delighted to get 2 or 3 Vatican coins from circulation. While of little "value" it was a real charge to get them in change. Can't do that any more, too bad.

Congrats Icollecteverything and nice coins all.

I know very little about Vatican coins but thought I would post this one as it is a GEM+ coin... but I have not idea regarding rarity or value. Worth grading?

Ive only ever found one Vatican coin searching through poundage. It was pretty messed up so couldn't enjoy the design. I was thinking of adding a few nice pieces just looking for the right ones.

While I don't systematically collect later Vatican coins, many of the pre Euro coins primarily trade as part of mint sets. Looks like a pretty typical strike and condition you'd find in a mint set in typical condition (ie nothing special) and Krause gives it a value of just a few dollars. Not sure of your purpose so can't really comment on whether its "worth" grading. BTW, the reverse design is the Annunciation of Mary; while a fairly straightforward/workmanlike design it shows that even some of the late common Vatican coins can have significant/meaningful designs.

There is a huge waiting list for coins and after repeated tries was just informed earlier this year that I'd been placed on the waiting list. Basically, its like any other queue, you move up when someone in front of you drops out. I'm still trying to figure out how to buy the annual medals when seem to managed in an entirely different manner. It used to be possible to buy some numismatic items in person at the bookstore within the colonnade to the left of St Peter's, but I doubt they offer coins anymore because the issues are so limited. If you go to the Vatican City web site there's a link to the numismatic office and if you wander around there for a bit you find an email address you can contact. Wow, these folks oughta go into marketing...

Over the counter sales were stopped after they had a riot or near riot there. I think it was about the second year of Euro circulation.
It is nice being on the mailing list but my quantity ordered is preprinted on the order form.

I don't think they've been issued yet but there's plenty of anticipatory salles going on eBay at the moment which seems usual this time of year.

  • I read that the sede vacante coinage would be limited to a 2 euro commorative only due to pressure from the European Union.
This year's coinage will be Pope Benedict XVI and next year Pope Francis.

Here is the news release related to the Sede coins:

Stamps And Coins Of The Sede Vacante
    Vatican City, 1 March 2013 (VIS) -

    ...

Regarding coins, a €2.00 one commemorating the Sede Vacante will be issued. It is the only one that will be circulated seeing that, according to the European convention with the Vatican City State, only one coin is allowed to be issued per year, with an extra one permitted in the case of a Sede Vacante. There will, therefore, be two coins in 2013: one for the Sede Vacante and the other, to be issued in April, with an image of Benedict XVI.

The Sede Vacante coin, 125,000 of which will be minted, bears the emblem of the Cardinal camerlengo with the pavilion of the Apostolic Camera.

There will also be 10,000 silver €5.00 coins minted for the Sede Vacante that will have a dove of the Holy Spirit and the words "Veni Sancte Spiritus" on one side and the emblem of the Cardinal camerlengo with the pavilion of the Apostolic Camera and the phrase "Sede Vacante 2013" on the other. Likewise, 5,000 gold €10.00 coins will be minted. This will be a very small coin (13.85mm in size and 3g in weight) and will have the same images and writing as the silver coin.

The €5.00 and €10.00 coins are collectibles and, theoretically, can only be used within the Vatican. They are not legal tender outside of the Vatican.

Like your 1946 L100 gold piece, thanks for sharing. I collect the L100 and this is one I'd not had a chance to get.

By clean this mess up I assume you mean all the text around the pic? You should be able to just click on the http link in photobucket which will copy it and then just pasteit into the box after you click on the image icon and not need the URLs, etc.

Found my other Vatican coin, I think this came in the same lot of World poundage as the other one. This actually looks nicer than the pic, hard to get the luster.

Does the Vatican mint their own coins?

I was thinking that this was my first lot of coins by the pound and it was really diverse and interesting although nothing really valuable. It probably was a good part of the reason I got interested in the Dark Side. My second purchase from a different source was no where near as nice, lucky I didn't get that one first.

Since the Lateran Treaty, when the Vatican was recognized as a sovereign nation and was granted the right to once again mint coins (which was lost when Italy invaded the Papal States and took over Rome, ending the temporal power of the popes), the actual coining has been the responsibility of the Italian Mint (Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato) in Rome. This mint also produces the coins for San Marino.

I remember those two! Very nice, indeed.
  • Today I got my order forms for Vatican coins.
The 2013 unc set will have the usual 8 values with Pope Benedict XVI.
The proof set will be the same 8 coins but 20 Euro silver and 50 Euro gold are also being offered in proof.

    Sede Vacante is another story.
