Where are all the PSA 10 Joe Montana RC's?

While not very common, it's certainly not as rare as many other big important cards in the hobby. This one has been on my radar for a while, but I have never seen one for sale anywhere...eBay, auction houses, shows, etc. Never seen one. There are 68 out there....come out wherever you are. One of the iconic cards in the hobby.

  • I have a gorgeous nine OC listed
A blazer. Low pop on those image
  • Beckett shows 65 with a 9.5 grade and only only 10. Don't know about SGC.

So they're out there -- you might try a BVG or SGC cross-over if you can buy one.
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was to convince the PSA 10 collector he didn't exist.

As rare as a PSA 10 Eddie Murray RC. Haven't seen one of those in ages. Though maybe I missed one on the bay while traveling or in the work cave.

Matt, I'm looking for one of those too...have it on a saved searchand have never seen one since the Dmitri auction

But that is an extremely rare card, only 10 exist. My main point is that with 68 Montanas out there you'd think one or 2 would have popped up in the last year somewhere but I have seen none.

I just looked it up. One sold a little over a year ago for $4500. Looks like average is around $3500-4000 over the past few years. It was an active card in 2011, but nothing in the last year

On a related note, Montana rookies in PSA 9 have really taken an upward spike in the last two years. Back in 2010-11, that card readily sold in the $250-300 range, now it's a $400 card.

When I first got back into the hobby I knew I had to have Montana and Young rookies. The latter (86T I am referring to) is especially tough, even in PSA 9 grade. I think there are many PSA 9 Montana RCs that are very strong for the grade and provide great value as compared to the 10s. Of course one can never go wrong with a deserving GEM MT Montana-- he is one of those people who transcend his sport, in terms of his place in popular culture and the esteem with which so many view him.

It is odd the 10s seem to never pop up. I guess he has so many fans and the card was iconic to many of us growing up, that if you get your hands on one you keep it for the long haul. In the meantime 9s are doing well and legit for sure.
  • I dont collect football cards but that is one I want for sure. PSA 9 though is fine with me. Nothing lower.

You are right about them never showing up. I dont look very often because im happy with my 9, but
i do look from time to time and Ive only seen 1 for sale as long as I can remember. But Montana was/is
super popular so most of them are locked up in personal collections im sure.

I am also pretty confident that the Montana has become a tougher card to receive a grade of 10 on. If my memory serves me well, the number of 10's in the population report has been pretty stable over the last five years. Is there a way to access this information, year by year?
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!

Are you implying that grading standards change over time?

Yeah....I've been wanting to upgrade my 8 for a while. But thats a hard pill to swallow. I WILL do it this year at some point. But much like upgrading my Emmitt RC from a 9 to a 10, the difference in price is a little suprising to say the least.

Have never thought about a 10 since I have never purchased a 10 card.

This one was sold by REA in 2010 for almost 4K.

One would think there's someone here that has one?

Some of the cards mentioned in this thread are ridiculously tough. 78 Murray, 86 Topps Steve Young. That Young, even for being a mid 80's issue, is crazy hard to find raw in good enough shape to even hope for a PSA 9 or 10. I have never seen a PSA 10 Murray RC. Ever. Trammell/Molitor RC from 78 is tough also.

This is about as close as I could get to buying a "10". I purchased this about 10 yrs ago, when BGS was much tougher (in my opinion). Yes, I know the possibility exists that this is sheet cut (were sheets from this issue plentiful? I'm unaware). Nice subgrades...

I saw a Montana PSA 10 at the Chicago Sun Times show a couple weeks ago. The dealer also had a Walter Payton 10, Michael Jordan 10, Jerry Rice 10, Dan Marino 10.

    It was quite impressive
After those four National League games, Gorman Thomas was never the same, and neither were the Brewers, and come to think of it neither was I.

  • I suspect that most of the 10's are in 9 Holders.

The "stupid" money these "10's" bring really baffles me.

    Are people really that stupid?

How many people here that hold solid 9's have cracked and sent back to PSA for a shot at a 10? I took one shot and got denied.

  • I'm finishing up a PSA Montana set (81-89). My 81 Montana is a PSA 9. The only 10's I found in my price range were 88 Topps - Passing Leaders and 89 Score - NFC Championship. The Montana PSA 9 is good enough for me.

I sold an '86 Topps Young PSA 10 ~6-7 years ago for $2500. I think it would go for $4-5K if one surfaces.
