Some BBCE Group rip Poppage

A little disappointed in the grades. The packs looked awesome when I sent them to PSA almost 4 months ago...

Sorry about the results. Guess the only thing left to do is rip them in frustration. image

PSA is very tough on wax, much tougher than cello, in my experience.

I have zero understanding of the criteria PSA uses to grade packs. I'm not trying to use hyperbole to be a smartarse, I honestly have no idea what the criteria is for high grade packs. I have a PSA 8 that has a dirty/grubby wrapper and I've seen PSA 9 or 10 packs with an off-centered wrapper in comparison to the center of the pack. I would think that the seal doesn't have anything to do with it since Steve Hart handles that end with the authentication. My (admittedly layman's) idea of a high-grade pack would be a clean wrapper, a centered wrap, clean corner folds with no unneeded overlap, and probably some general eye appeal.

It's a moot point on my end because the number means little to me, just that the wax pack has the Hart SOA, but I'm still somewhat curious what the criteria are.

Any kind of tear on corner or side of pack will limit grade to 7 at best. The seal is definitely a factor too as is color and gloss or any wrinkles. Centering is also a factor but not as significant.

Edit to add: Also important to note is that some wrapper tears do occur post-holdering.

I might as well rip the PSA 6. Maybe even the 7's

I can't wait to see what these packs look like because they were really nice when I sent them to PSA. Don't see how one came back a 6. They were still in the BBCE packaging. No tears, nothing.

On the mini wax packs, check the corners--that's where you will typically find a tear or two. It's sometimes difficult to notice due to the way the mini packs are wrapped.

I recently sent qty 4 1975 Topps mini packs for grading. All had no tears and I was sure they would grade well. I received two PSA 7s, 1 PSA 6 and 1 PSA 8. On the PSA 6 and 7 packs, all showed visible tears on the corners. I assume it was done during transit. Sometimes it happens...

That's the irony - that a defect they're so tough on is commonplace in the highest graded packs. I saw a PSA 9 '71 Basketball pack for sale at a show recently for over $1000...the wrapper had three gum tears, one almost an inch long. The emperor has no clothes....

Such wrapper tearing is not uncommon post grading especially with the older holders if the gum is loose in the pack. It's part of the risk you assume when sending in wax. I have kept many wax packs in GAI holders for this reason primarily.

Has anyone seen a high-grade pack in a new PSA holder that had wrapper tears in it?
  • Yes though not nearly as much. Prime example is the PSA 10 OPC Gretzky pack floating around ebay on and off the past few months. It certainly tore post grading.
