OT: Have you ever known someone who has had cards stolen, or money fraud ?

Just had my first case of money fraud.
Someone used my bank account to make a 5k withdrawal from my bank account.
They said this happens all the time.

Has anyone here known of someone, or personally has had

A. Cards stolen from house
B. Money defrauded

thanks

  • My son was scammed for $2500 due to a bad money order. It was a harsh lesson for an 18 year old.

My bank requires photo id for all withdrawls

quite a few years ago pre protection ebay I sent a bank check for $1k and was taken.
Big ring. He did it is about 4 states. Very few things can be done by authorities...and very few even willing

New york attorney general's office even said' why were you so dumb." and wouldn't lift a finger.

This past summer our house was broken into (the morning we returned from our honeymoon, the guy was caught). I had about 12-15 cards taken. They were sitting out because they were all in really good shape and was going to mail them in for grading. Thankfully the rest of my collection was stored or who knows my reaction (it was already pretty emotional, obviously). At any rate most of the ones that my parents got me from shows as a kid along with a few others including my childhood highlights:

    Ken Griffey Jr UD Rookie
    Cal Ripken Fleer Rookie
    Wade Boggs Topps Rookie
    Tony Gwynn Topps Rookie
    Mark McGwire Topps OLY
    Don Mattingly Topps Rookie
    Paul Molitor Topps Rookie
Jose Canseco Donruss Rookie (My favorite card I got as a kid).

My sisters little league card was also in there, I was going to slab it for a gift. When I realized that was gone, it was a pretty big slap too since it obviously wouldn't be resold.

I claimed everrything on my insurance, but since none of them were slabbed, they didn't really do much for me. I'm considering going to the courthouse when this guy gets sentenced in a few weeks (the robbery occurred last July, he was caught early August).

I've found unauthorized charges on my credit card before, but the CC company just reversed them and sent me a new card.

Back in the 90s during the early days of Ebay, money orders or cash (*GASP*) I sent got "lost in the mail" a little too often for my taste.

I had somebody try to use my card, but the bank caught it and I didn't lose anything more than an hour at the bank required to get a new card. Turns out the local grocery store's database was hacked...

I also purchased some cards online circa 2003 or 2004 marketed as a complete set, turned out he kept the rookies. (at least most of them- he was so clueless he missed some)

Back in December of 2006, someone got in our house and took some cheap jewelry, a 107 year old family heirloom pocket watch and a small safe under my bed with about $5000 beckett value of cards( PSA 8 '69 Mantle, and mid/high grade rookies of Ryan, Schmidt, Jackson, Brett, Yount, along with many mid '60s superstars). Regular homeowners gave me $2500 for the cards, which was probably all I could have gotten if I sold them. But, to add insult to injury, it was my 2nd claim from that calendar year (flood in February), so I was dropped by my homeowners and ended up paying more for the next couple of years. The theft really killed my passion for cards at the time. Many of these were from my childhood. I was 41 when it occurred. But thanks in large part to reading the posts and feeling the excitement on these boards, I'm back baby.image
