A Year Back in the Hobby - & a Big Thanks to the Board

OK - not quite a year, but I re-upped to get the March special (and no I didn't have to Google who John Wooden was - kids :LOLimage But in that year I have had quite the education. When I first found my cards up in the attic last year, I figured I found cardboard gold. But like 9,337,927 noobs before me, I was dealt a low blow by that initial submission. And I honestly questioned both my motives for getting back in and whether I wanted to continue in the first place, never mind what I wanted to collect. I did want to go graded, but the cost, and the seeming gamble I was taking even making submissions seemed to be a real neagative for me. I wanted to stay in the hobby, but I didn't want to leave my cards in binders or boxes - that's how they ended up in the attic in the first place.

And then PSA raised prices, and the February special wasn't all that special, and I was on record as saying I probably wasn't going to re-up. But the more I read here, the more I realized the truth preached here many times since last May - collect what you want to collect. Some people here collect high grade cards because that's what they want. Some only submit what they (from experience) should get only the highest grades. I am neither of those. I have learned to appreciate what to look for in raw cards, and what would make one better than the other. I will continue to slab cards - and use PSA (and use the registry - dang that's addicting - although for my new hockey collection I may buy/submit from the other TPGs. And if I end up with a pile of 5-7s, so be it. I know some of those will be from my childhood collection - and there is no price on those.

So I would like to thank all of you for your sage advice. I am pretty much a lurker - I think most of my posts before Sheet-Gate today were for group rips. But I check this site almost daily. To those of you who are the veterans - thank you. Thank you Cincy for the group rips. Thank you RaiderGuy for the Blue flip - I just got a John Hannah for the next one.

For all the new noobs - these guys know their stuff. Your attic finds might not pay for dinner at McDonalds, let alone fund college for your kids. But these boards will connect you with a group of guys who can answer your questions and help rekindle your love for a truly great hobby.

  • You took the words right off my keyboard. Seems like it is a common experience with getting back in the hobby. I agree with you about the grading and have to remind myself from time to time about it. Most of my cards aren't worth the price of grading. So, I've come to the conclusion upon saving money by (PLEASE CLOSE YOUR EYES OR STOP READING NOW IF YOU BELIEVE THAT YOUR POLITICAL/CARD GRADING PARTY IS THE ONLY CORRECT PARTY AND THE REST ARE THE DOWN FALL OF THE COUNTRY AND SOCIETY) getting my cards graded by SGC. It's a heck of a lot cheaper, nothing to join, and I actually like the way the cards look in the slabs. I grade my cards for personal value, keep sake, and maybe one day 40 years from now selling them for my last trip to Sandals. I do buy PSA cards from time to time. So, in essence, I do help support PSA community in a way.
