First Sub (SGC)

Didn't do too bad considering most of these cards were bought before I knew about grading and this is my first sub. Chose SGC because they had a 5 dollar special, no membership, and I really like the holder. Going to use this as a guide on my first PSA sub which I will probably make in April.

Pleasantly surprised about the 85 Gretz, a little disappointed in the 80 Gretz (got killed on centering) and really thought the Dionne would be a 90+. The Hull I have no idea what went wrong, it wasn't 50/50 but I can't figure why it would be a miscut. Likely just a bonehead move on my part.

All of these are for my Top 100 NHL All time Scorers collection and will never be sold, really just wanted to get them in holders. I'm still trying to figure out if it is better to buy new cards already in grades I want or go ahead and try to grade the rest of my collection, which would grade similar to below.

Year Publisher Set Card# Player Name Description Grade
1 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee 8 MARCEL DIONNE ROOKIE 84
2 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee 250 WAYNE GRETZKY 70
3 1980-81 Topps 140 RAY BOURQUE ROOKIE 92
4 1980-81 Topps 250 WAYNE GRETZKY 88
5 1981-82 O-Pee-Chee 111 PAUL COFFEY ROOKIE 86
6 1983-84 O-Pee-Chee 29 WAYNE GRETZKY 88
7 1984-85 O-Pee-Chee 243 WAYNE GRETZKY 88
8 1984-85 O-Pee-Chee 67 STEVE YZERMAN ROOKIE 88
9 1985-86 O-Pee-Chee 120 WAYNE GRETZKY 96
10 1987-88 O-Pee-Chee 53 WAYNE GRETZKY 92

If you already have the cards it will be way cheaper to grade them than buy new already graded copies, just wait for the $5 type specials. You may want to stick with one grading company though, it tends to looks better and you can always register your cards into a set.

That's kind of what I figured, as long as I pick the right cards to have graded. When I picked through for this sub I left out a lot of cards based on posts on this forum, that I previously would have considered "mint".

I hear you on one company, and it will likely be PSA due to popularity of PSA cards. Not interested in graded sets at this point, but who knows in the future.
  • Any of the cards that you have listed would be worth more than the $5 grading fee and that's probably true for the top 100 scorers. I've found it's worth getting the cards in a PSA holder as they tend to have more value than a similar card in an SGC holder. I assume you're going to stick with SGC? I used to like their holder more but found it was too bulky.

Can you post a picture of the Hull?

Marcel Dionne's rookie was 71/72. Is that what you had graded?
  • Will post the Hull when I get it back.

I have a '71 Dionne in a PSA 7 slab, but this sub was a '72 card that they have mislabeled as a rookie.

Will probably switch to PSA as most of my graded cards are actually PSA. Only went with SGC because of the $5 special and no member fee's.

When I said set I mean't your top 100 scorers set, you can do a custom set, it would be a nice way to display it.
