Hey guys, I'm new here and wanted to join the fun. I'm into my second year of submitting cards and having a blast! I was wondering if anyone else is looked down upon for grading cards at your local shows by dealers? Maybe it's an Pennsylvania thing? Graded cards aren't too big here in Amish country yet. I've learned not to mention that I'm looking for gradable cards because I'm usually shunned and then overcharged. I usually carry my SMR mag rolled up in my back pocket with the cover ripped off so no one can see what it is. I wouldn't want to carry my new PSA tote bag around, that's for sure! I just keep my mouth shut and pick out the gems. Just this Saturday a dealer said "You spent long enough pickin' those out, ya gonna grade em'? I don't believe in that kinda thing." Haha I just smiled. I haven't been to big show or National yet, this probably doesn't happen there. I'll just keep doing my thing and keep having fun!

Havn't ran into any of that, but i believe that it happens. What part of PA are you from? I'm in York. Not too many shows around here to attend. Just the occasional mall show.

Here in Maryland dealers at the shows I go to don't care if your looking to buy cards to get graded.
Never had a dealer say anything to me about taking to long of a time looking thorough there cards
or try to raise prices on me. So far I have been treated fair and with respect.

Must of the cards I am looking for at shows are Frank Thomas cards for my own personal collection and
oddball players that I can get cheap raw if I can find them. Must card show dealers don't know about people
collecting oddball players and that some are willing to paying top dollar for graded singles foe there collection.

Hi, hello, how are ya? image

I've had several dealers tell me they don't go for that grading crap when I ask for PSA cards. I just say "Yes sir." and move on.

A least you have local shows to go to. The closest show for me is 2.5 hrs. away, and its a small mall show.

I dont wanna grow up, Im a Toys-R-Us kid!
  • The funniest thing I've ever seen was when I met Bryan (eagleeyekid) who is a member here at the frank & son show. He would go to tables that had only raw cards. He carried a small chair (folded) on his back and would ask the dealer if he could sit and look at the cards closely. Sometimes they say yes and sometimes no, so he says "I'll give u 10 bucks" and that would do it. He had a headband with a led light in front cherry picking. Looked like an evil genius at work.
  • I like the light and chair idea! Hahaha I stood at a table on Saturday and looked at 60's football commons for two hours straight until I felt light headed and had to take a break. Bought 10 off that guy for $18, 7 of which were sent off in an order today.

I've gone to a few of the mall shows at the Park City Mall. Never went to the Harrisburg Mall shows. The Galleria Mall, and the West Manchester Mall in York sometimes have small shows to.

Hi, welcome to the boards . I am also from Pa. Exeter to be exact 8 miles east of Reading . I attend local mall shows , have been to Park City mall . I havent really run into many dealers who frown upon picking cards out for grading . In fact i`ve come across probably more dealers who are now selling graded cards .

looking for 1988 Fournier estrellas stickers , 1985 Prism Jewel stickers , anything Jesse Owens .

    Welcome 10zig!,

I'm from Ephrata. I insist on PSA, BVG, SGC for my pc. I feel it's worth it for the peace of mind.

For a good time, I can recommend checkin out the Adamstown strip. To the rest of ya, Adamstown is the antiquing capital of the east coast (and maybe U.S.). Legend is, a copy of the Declaration of Independence was found behind a framed painting several years ago. Renningers mall has a pretty good raw card dealer ...he claims to have 1,000s in storage. Anyway, I haven't been there in couple years.

E-town Saturday's Market has/had a dealer with a big selection. Good time on a Saturday. Bought some really nice faked Mantle/Jeter/Mays auto's there about 6 years ago. (Yep, he refunded my $). I was naive back then.

I still love the occasional flee market or show, but most of my transactions happen in cyberspace and with good success.

From my experience MANY dealers do not like grading. Some think it's a scam, some don't like having their cards talked down (awareness of condition grading brings), others don't like having their best condition cards picked through. IMO they have just needlessly resisted adapting to the market and are a bunch of babies. They should be using it to their benefit ($).
  • Last show I went to most of the dealers had graded cards. I didn't manage to buy anything raw worth grading - all heavily searched.
  • What really bugs me about a select few of dealers are the ones who give you a high price on a raw card followed by "that would grade such and such". That's total B.S. right there. Don't charge me on what you THINK it's going to grade at. Either sell it for what it is ...which is a raw card or get it graded AND THEN we can talk about graded prices.

I'll join the PA convo....I'm originally from York and have moved to Phoenixville which isn't too far from King of Prussia. You should really check out The Philly Show in Valley Forge if you get a chance. It's about an hour and a half drive, at most from Lancaster and would be worth the trip if you've only ever been to Park City shows. I could imagine Lebanon Levi probably doesn't care too much for the plastic slabs....
    I collect Cal Ripken cards, T206, E95, E210, R319.
