Did you ever put a card up for sale just to see what happens

and not expect it to sell at the price you asked....... and then it did. I'm not sure how I feel about parting with it. I almost want to rebuy it.

I can't be alone on this.
I'm building a 1968 and a 1970 Topps set. I have lots of 1970s and 1960s to offer in trade.

Did this a few months ago, with a BIN/BO to see what offers came in. Someone hit the BIN in four hours, for 3x what I paid to get it. I was heartbroken. I decided to stash all the cash, and hope to find another one. Only took 2 months before I found another one, at pretty much the exact same rate it cost to get the first one.
Worked out for me thankfully, reacquired a similar one and had a few hundred more $$ to spend on other stuff.

Yup. I've been there. I had a modern pop 1 PSA 10 up with a $500 bin/obo. Got a $400 best offer and I went to think it over during dinner. When I got done with dinner, I found that the guy who submitted the offer changed his mind and went ahead and hit the BIN instead of waiting for me to respond to his best offer. Fun times. image

  • Done it a couple times. Some sold, some did not. If you do it too often, you get a reputation as a high priced seller and people ignore our auctions. Vintage snow mobiles and sportscards for example.

Vintagesnowmobiles doesn't give anyone any motivation to buy their cards. You can find a lot of the cards they sell being sold by other sellers for much less.

For instance, they're asking $650 for a 1994 SP Alex Rodriguez PSA 9. There's a bunch of them sitting with BIN's under $200 from other guys.

I'm really not trying to sound like a image by asking this....but why offer it(for any price)in the first place if you really didn't want to part ways with it?? image

I can only speak for myself on this, but greed is not my motivator. It is more of, well, I have this card that I would like to keep in my collection, but if someone is willing to pay this crazy price, then I am willing to part with it.

And FWIW, after looking at other sales, I found that while the card went for more than I expected, it wasn't the top sale. I'm not as far off as other high priced sellers.

Sounds more like common sense to me. To me greed is coveting what you are not entitled to. Greed is a "Me first" attitude when "Me" has no right to be first.

Well said. And truth be told, I think I'd rather have the card back. Ah well. Live and learn. Maybe the sale of that one card will be the catalyst to shift my focus on my collection and move in another direction. I wonder how many times that has happened to people. HA!
