Opinions on this OPC - after market sheet cut?

What do you think; are the edges too smooth to be a factory cut?

I'd say no for two reasons.

    A. A new factory blade could have produced that cut.

    B. If that was recently cut, the cutters would have done a better job centering it from side to side.
  • That's tough to tell from the slightly blurry pictures plus two edges buried. There are six pics but they look like they are just duplicated.
The edges aren't totally smooth but it's hard to see if it's showing characteristics of a rough cut sheet cut.
My biggest concern is on the right hand side about halfway down the card seems to change thickness as though it was cut in two directions. I have an OPC card with close to that cert number that displays the same thing and I don't have an explanation other than it wasn't cut with wire. I haven't put it under a dissecting microscope yet to confirm.

I agree that it is odd that it is not cut L/R better. You would think a cutter would get that right.
I would pass on this card if you have any reservations about it.

I would think PSA looks very closely at this card. You certainly can't tell anything from the scan.

Unless I saw a MUCH better scan, I would think the card is good.

  • I agree the scans are blurry which is the main reason why I would not bid on this card.
The second reason is the jog on the right hand side of the card. It can be seen in both front and back photos.

I contacted the seller and asked if there was any slight rough cut that doesn't show up in the pictures because they aren't the clearest images. I received a very odd response that said "this may not be the card for you". I have to think they understand my concern and they don't believe it's factory cut.

Or...the seller doesn't want to deal with a prospective buyer who will micro-analyze a card and not trust the third party grading label.

    Just sayin'.

I don't know either way on this card. If it was an after-market sheet cut, I'd be surprised why the card "only" received an 8. Most of the sheet cut OPC's I've seen tend to have razor sharp corners, edges and centering which usually would lead to a higher grade (by whichever company may grade it)

The seller is using a photo, not a scan, so it is not going to show the detail a scan would. Zooming through the browser, the borders are not clean. I'd have no hesitation to bid if I wanted the card, which if it goes cheaply because of the doubt, I might.

If I were the seller, I might say the exact same thing. As much as I like to sell things, an ignorant or hyper critical buyer is the last thing I want. I'm not saying you are either one, but the seller has a point: If you have any reservations whatsoever, don't bid. It is an expensive card, not a rare one.

  • Not sure there is any question as to rough cut, see Maple Leaf above. The cut is hardly clean, especially on the right edge. If someone recently cut that card from a sheet they did a pretty poor job.

I've seen sheet cuts graded as low as 4.5 with razor sharp corners. Surface issues often come into play. Most of these cards aren't submitted if they are commons because their value is less than grading costs so you usually see 9's or 10's in late 70's OPC with 8's or less being a "miss". Obviously, with higher value cards anything will be sent in, however you would expect that they would make sure a Gretzky was perfectly centered even at the expense of the surrounding cards.

The seller's response response isn't encouraging.

Who buys from PP? Maybe we should ask them... or not.
