Story Behind the 1970 Topps Proof Supers?

Can anyone fill me in on the back ground behind the 1970 Topps Football "Test SUPERS"?
These cards all have blank backs and square corners.
It seems as if I'm seeing more and more of these offered up all the time.
Does anyone know the story behind these or where they might have originated from?
Was there perhaps a large find of uncut sheets or something somewhere along the line?
Just wondering where the heck, they all came from.
Many Baseball examples from the same time period, are also available.

Do you mean the "proof" cards?

I picked this one up years ago.

I looked up the the football cards you are referring to, I would assume that a large quantity got into the hobby. Looks like in football there are two different kinds, the glossy and the more "standard" looking card.

There is even an uncut sheet on ebay right now. It wouldn't take too many of the sheets escaping from the printer and you have people cutting them up and selling the individual cards.

As in all "proof" and most test issues, they were most likely stolen from the factory, taken home by a manager who might have had permission or "rescued" from the garbage. Unless Topps made an exception and made them available. I have never heard of them offering complete sheets.

    Nice items!

Items come up all the time. Sometimes, like with the 1968 Topps Plaks that surfaced a while back, you get an explanation, other times you don't.

I would imagine that whoever was hoarding these doesn't want too much information to get out that might hurt the value.

If you are really curious, contact a few of the sellers that are offering many of the cards and see if they will fill you in.
