Jackie Robinson cards are about to get hot!
![Big80s](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/authoricons/big80s_thorpe2.jpg)
I caught an early screening of a new film coming out called "42". It's about Jackie's first few years in the big leagues, and obviously all of the struggles with the racial barriers in baseball at that time. The film hits theaters on April 12th and it is outstanding! The actor that plays Robinson gave a fantastic performance, and Harrison Ford (playing the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers) was great, as well.
Anyways - I've gotta think there will be a spike in his card sales, and maybe those of Pee Wee Reese, who's also featured in the movie as one of the good guys.

<< <i>We've known this movie would be coming out for a while now. If anyone thought it would increase demand for his cards, why haven't they already been buying them, causing them to already be hot?
>>
Maybe WE know about the movie, but what about the other 95% of the population that hasn't heard of it yet? I think it could make an impact if it does really well and is nominated for awards.

Good chance you'll be right. The great thing is that if you are right you'll always be able to make a very nice profit from being able to anticipate the cards that will get hot
<< <i>I could be wrong. >>
You're not.
<< <i>The first trailer with the gangsta rap really made me want to see the movie. >>
Same here. It gave me chills.
How accurate? Have no idea.
The "period" look and costumes - uni's - look great!
My wife wants to see it also. Will be going.

That's the thing to me...
My girlfriends reaction...
She is no fan of baseball at all. But when that trailer came on, she grabbed me hard and said "we HAVE to see that".
So I'm pretty sure it's gonna be a big deal.

I'll see it, but I had the exact opposite reaction from the trailers. I think it will be a
I don't want to feel good about this movie. I want to feel dirty, and embarrassed, and shamed for the things this country has done barely 65 years ago. I want to see how hard the struggle that it was for him that probably caused him an early death. And while we've come a long way we haven't beat racism, not really even close. I'm not going to get that from this movie and I'm going to leave wanting $7.50 and 2 hours of my life back.

The 52 and 54 both look odd.
The bowmans and the leaf issues are terrible looking cards.
His memorabilia will get a short term boost in demand for sure from the movie.
<< <i>53, 55, & 56 Topps are by far his best looking cards.

I have to agree with this.
As I see it, you dont want interest just from people already interested, you want people that are new to collecting to be interested in Jackie. That will drive prices up. Not existing collectors.
<< <i>That song isn't in the movie. >>
Just curious - but how do you know?

I really like both the '52 and '54 card for one simple reason. The design of the cards from those years. The red background on the '52 is stunning. My opinion. I also can't wait for the movie, I will be going the first night it opens. Doug
<< <i>The bowmans and the leaf issues are terrible looking cards. >>
I think the 1950 Bowman is his best looking card.
I can't wait for the movie... and the Jay-Z song is not in the movie per the soundtrack, which was just released a few days ago! All time-period appropriate songs from my understanding.

There's no hip hop in this movie. It's all period appropriate.

Then why include a no talent A$$ clown in the previews? Jay-z has no business being associated with this film. Im curious to see how much "Hollywood" is added to the movie.

This movie might inspire collectors to who were never particularly interested in Robinson to become interested. People know the story, but how many people really know what went on behind the scenes. Kinda like the movie Miracle did for the 1980 US Hockey team.

To grab the attention of a younger audience. Every guy who's interested in baseball above the age of 40 is going to see this movie, but the kids out there might not have the same draw.

It's a super common tactic.
The movie "Take Me Home Tonight" with Topher Grace a few years ago used the Eddie Money song by the same name in its trailers, but not in the actual movie.
<< <i>It's just speculation on my part. But I think, thanks to this movie - his cards will get some new eyes and increased attention from collectors. I've never owed a Jackie Robinson card before, but after this movie - I wanted to know what was out there. >>
Yea, when Semi Pro came out, I couldn't stop myself from buying every Will Farrell card out there! <wink>

Everyone in the theater loved it...huge applause at the end. I can see the movie doing a few weeks of strong business.
I saw it in Torrance, CA which is a really ethnically diverse area. There were a whole lot of people there from just about every ethnic background you can think of, and what surprised me was a LOT of kids.
As mentioned above, the acting was great. I really think Harrison Ford might get a best supporting actor golden globe or oscar nomination. The movie itself was little more than standard television mini series or movie of the week stuff, but as a baseball fan, the historical setting and context was just incredible. And so was watching baseball be played in a different manner than it is today(though Carl Crawford's threatening to make Dodgers fans remember how valuable a good leadoff hitter is).
I really enjoyed it. I've noticed prices edging up on Ebay the past month or so. I wonder if the movie will do well enough(it would have to do 100 million and I think thats a long shot) to make it a cultural fixture enough for it to have a lasting upward impact on Robinsons cards.

I wasnt aware a man worth close to $500 million and that is one of the most popular music artists today could be considered a talentless A$$ clown..... Anyways, I liked the preview. It definitely helped draw in a younger audience for the movie which is good. You dont want kids growing up not knowing who Jackie Robinson is. I plan on going to see it this week sometime with a bunch of college friends. Should be great. I anticipate a great movie, and a great reaction from everyone who watches it.

I payed $53 late last year for a nice 1956 Topps PSA 3, and the end price at the time was running $49-73 for psa 3. I've seen them selling up as high as $95 in the past month or so.
He vowed that this would change & that MLB will triple their efforts & funding for the inner city programs ect.
Then Stephen A Smith went on a rant about how that 8% is racist & that African American are not given the fair chance to play baseball.
Nearly every African American guy I know has zero interest in baseball. I often hear they don't like the game cause it's "too slow" or "boring".
The commissioner & multiple programs have had interest in this topic & how concerning it is and that something needs to be done about it.
Here's my question though: How come David Stern, Roger Goodell or anyone in the media have not mentioned these stats?
