'86-'87 OPC Wayne Gretzky LL #259 PSA 10 POP 1

I have an '86-'87 OPC #1 Gretzky - it's a PSA 10 POP 1. There have been 87 graded (total) and there are 31 PSA 9's. I am trying to get an idea of what it might be worth.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Peter

  • An ebay auction will tell you it's worth if you are planning on selling. Probably get your best money consigning to Probstein or PWCC.
I saw one of the other number PSA 10 Gretzky (can't remember the number) get bid to about $185 and it was POP 5 at the time so yours would be higher.
    Do you have any scans?

  • Wow I've had cards centered better than that come back with the OC qualifier.

It just looks that way because the card is shifted in the holder and partially under the inner left rail.

    I would guess around $300.
  • I just checked your set - Looks good! There is no Gretzky #1 so I guess that you were referring to #259 Pop 1 Gretzky.
The card is a little OC. It measures 60/40 on my screen including the hidden part which is seen at the top left.
I would think it should be more than $300 but potential buyers may be concerned about the centering but it's the only one so it would be interesting to see what happens in an auction.

86/87 seems to be the scarcest year in the 80's. It has the fewest set collectors, not sure if that is due to lack of cards or interest. It happens to be one of my favourite years - I like the colours and the Roy rookie.
  • If ebay seller vintagesnowmobiles had this card it would be "worth" about 125 grand.

I love seeing 80s Gretzky cards.

  • Looks like it just became Pop 2. That's the problem with 80's OPC. There is still lots out there and a whack of uncut sheets just waiting for prices to go up.
On the bright side, he isn't letting it go cheap.

Awesome, love that card. Need to get one for the collection. Love his main issue from that set as well, Gretzky in his absolute prime, 200 points a year Gretzky.

Me thinks the sky's the limit for rare, high grade 80's Gretzky cards in the future.
Twenty years from now these things will have huge asking prices. Just my opinion.
Incredibly popular player. He pretty much has Jordan status in the hockey collecting world.
  • Agreed, and the pop for cards like the '80 #250 are very low, less than (15) 10s on that card and not much wax around.

I also think that Hockey is under appreciated in the US, and that the game could take off at some point.
  • The game has taken off in the US - back when Gretzky was traded to LA. Before that it was ranked #187 in nation wide viewing.
I don't see it taking over any of the big 3.
I do see a huge upside for Gretzky cards. Careful when buying a #250, 1980 Gretzky.

Interested to hear your opinion on that card. I wouldn't buy one raw that's for sure, my #250 sub got crushed. Also wouldn't buy a KSA or Beckett card. Anything else I should be looking for?
  • Multiple copies of 1980 full sheets sold in auction (about two years ago) to a known sheet cutter.

Yes, about 40-45 sheets from 1980-81 and 1981-82 o-pee-chee sold a few years back.

Does anyone know how many 1979-80 opc-mint sheets are out there ?
  • You have just lost money by everybody knocking your card first lesson do not post here. And just put it in a Auction without asking for advice.

I'd put it up for a $1200-$1500 BIN and wouldn't accept less than $800 for it.

Also, I'd like to add that if you guys really think half the player registry whales even bother looking at the card's condition and centering then you might need to reconsider your understanding of the graded card market.

I'd tend to agree, and it follows that a market like that isn't sustainable.

Also, I'd love to have the card in question in my collection.

Why would a market for collectibles where the consumer is more concerned with the authenticator's opinion than their own opinion necessarily be unsustainable?
