I emailed BJ @ CU. She told me that things would speed along if I came up with weights for this set. I have no idea how to do this. Please help. I would think the SP's, Errors, Reggie Jackson, Yaz, and other superstars would have highest weighting. What do you guys think? Here's a list:

Okay, Here's my guess. However I was not born until the season was in full swing. So please don't come on here and berate me about your favorite player being weighted too low. Gemmint, Master Z, and Quality: You guys know more about this than me, please help.

CARDSG12 - The graded weights in all sets goes from 1 to a high of 10 if need be. Your assesment doesn't have any common grades of 1. Surely Randy Jones, Dave Cash, Marty Perez, John Mayberry etc... should,'nt be worth a 3 each. That should be for low level Hall Of Famers like a Don Sutton. Check the regular Topps '76 set of who is a common, a minor star and a superstar, it will give you a better idea...Good Luck!...jay
  • Thanks, Jay. I'll do a little more research this weekend and try to figure something out that fits. I didn't have the slightest of how to do this. I don't know any of the players except the stars. Thanks again. I'll go back to work.

    Here's an idea:

Whittle it down and weight the players only by 1-5

    One for commons
    Five for superstars
+1 for the rarer variation, etc.
    +1 if SP's demand a significant premium

Minor stars, HOF'ers, etc. all fall in between 2 and 4.

    For example:
    Bert Blyleven 2 or 3
    Joe Rudi 1
    Pete Rose 5
Greg Gross 1 (2 for the harder variation)
    Dennis Eckersley 5 (rookie card)
    Boog Powell 2
    Rod Carew 3
    Reggie Jackson 4

    Just my thoughts...
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Okay guys. What do you think about this? I haven't a clue if this would be even close. Like I said I only know of the guys who have been mentioned on game broadcasts. LMK if this is acceptable or if there are any changes that need to be made. Thanks, Gregg.

Gregg, I'm not sure how tough the SP's & the errors are, so I'll let someone else respond to them.
Upon a quick glance I noticed you have non Hall of Famers Dave Parker & Gary Carter at 4 which is higher then the Hall Of Famers Catfish Hunter & Don Sutton which you gave a 3 each. I would leave the 2 Hof'ers at 3 and adjust Parker & Carter to 2 each. Munson you also have as a 4 and although he is a non HOF'er his popularity superceeds the HOF induction, so I don't have a problem with him being a higher weight. So trial and error, your getting there...jay
  • All right, Anyone else see anything that needs to be changed? Thanks in advance, Gregg

Quality: I ranked Thurman high, because I knew he played for the Yanks'. If you think I need to drop it, I will. Thanks for helping. Gregg.

I don't collect the set, but Carew and Seaver should be raised IMO.

  • The weighting applied to Kelloggs sets needs to be consistent with the way weighting is applied to regular issue Topps sets. Not only that, but the weighting for all Kelloggs sets needs to be consistent with each other. Rather than having a dozen different collectors, with varying degrees of familiarity with Kelloggs issues, all coming up with different weighting ideas for each set, one person familiar with how PSA applies weighting already, armed simply with a Beckett or SCD needs to go through and apply weighting in a consistent manner. Weighting is simply based on value. The minor minor stars with a value just above a common, need to be weighted as a common. The common variations need to be weighted as a common. Variations that aren't of any significant premium need to be counted as a common. Weighting needs to kick in with stars, minor stars, errors, and SP's of significant premium. All you have to do is look in the Beckett or SCD yearly guides to see what these cards are, and how they should be rated. The same thing then needs to be applied to all Kelloggs sets.
  • Waittill: Are there any specific cards, or do all of them need to be changed? Am I out in left field with these? Like I said before, I only know of the players that's been mentioned on Broadcasts, or seen listed in the SMR or Beckett. I also apologize if I came off Brash or ugly to you in an earlier thread. I was having a bad day.

NickM: Why Carew and Seaver? I thought I had weighted them pretty heavy.

    Anyone Else?

The Eck and Rose cards are the most vaulable in the set so they should get a weight of 5. The SP's are more vaulable then all the other cards in the set so they get a weight of 4. Most of the variations don't have any differences in value so they should't have differnt weights.
  • alfiewt: Agreed. You know more of the older guys than I do, and probably have a Big Beckett handy, and I don't. This is fine with me. Any others have a problem with alfiewt's weighting? Looks good to me.

Yes, the big Beckett is handy.

As for knowing the players better... I was born in 1978 so I don't remember seeing most of them play, I only know what I've read and heard.
  • Thanks, alfiewt. And if there are no more additions or corrections, alfiewt's weights will be accepted as is.
