First sub scans

Hi all...thanks very much for talking me down off the ledge after I saw the online grades. Now that I got the cards back, scanned them and checked them at magnification...I'm kicking myself for dropping so much coin on grading poor condition cards. Live and learn...
Here are 3 of the cards....the Ryan came back "evidence of trimming". The card measures 2.5"x3.5". Anybody shed some light on why they think that? Thanks!

  • Thx...I submitted over 50 cards...The levels I submitted them at were way overstated. If the package got lost in the mail, I would've made out like a bandit. image

Bottom right corner put the Maris in a 6...little bit of a bend/flip...Ryan looks trimmed on bottom right corner...feel of it with your finger for "smoothness"...Also each card has 6 sides front back and 4 edges..buy a 10-20x loupe...Gibson has a wrinkle somewhere probably on back....don't give up persistence will be rewarded.

wow on the Ryan. all i can "see" from your scan w/o louping it would be a virtually undetectable outward flairing of the lower right border which means it might be slightly miscut.

no surprise there, but i'd pound the door down to get that card in a PSA 7 holder or at least get an explanation.
  • Thanks itzagoner...that was my next question...how to go about resubmitting. I have to call PSA tonight anyway because one of my cards came back in a cracked slab...not good QC IMHO. Also, I entered the wrong card# for a 73 Ryan on my sub sheet. I entered #110 instead of #220, but entered everything else correctly. The slab came back labeled #110 Bob Watson. How good of a job are they doing grading a card if they don't even notice the discrepancy between Nolan Ryan and Bob Watson? Doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence for PSA.

they certainly gave you a healthy supply of issues to deal with. explain what happened with the so-called mechanical errors and they should work that out for you.

easy stuff......the Ryan. discuss that ASAP.

That Ryan looks good to me. Hard to tell with a scan on the "evid of trim". Send the Ryan in again, it could grade, if it comes back "evid of trim" again, it just might be trimmed. I would also look very closely at the Gibson for a light crease or wrinkle. That is also a nice looking card.

It seems to me that the higher grades are tougher to get than they used to be.

  • So I call PSA to get the scoop on the Ryan card. I should have called Moviefone. I would've gotten more information. They said that they couldn't tell me any details about why any card was given a certain grade or why the Ryan card was deemed "trimmed". They did say that if I sent it back for a review that it most likely will return ungraded again, but 2 graders have to agree on a claim like that. So disappointed...

Sorry to say I do agree with the grades, too many soft corners there. I also would resub the Ryan, if you get that card graded it should make up for your first sub disappointment. Good luck. Doug

What exactly were you expecting to be told over the phone regarding a card you have in hand? That Ryan is on the list of cards that gets an extra set or ten of eyeballs on it.
  • CNote....I was expecting the "industry leader in grading" to have their act together enough to have some kind of comment log just in case someone like me calls and wants to know why their cards were totally devalued. I don't think that is out of line.

    Pinstriper. Here's what happened to me last month;

Sent in a full Bazooka stamp panel. All there, but certainly not high grade, I figured about a 5 or 6. Noticed when the grades posted that it was "authentic". I simply could not believe it. I was lucky (?) enough to call PSA before they could ship it to me and put the submission on hold.

Spoke with customer service SEVERAL times (the person was very polite) but got nowhere. Was told I could send it back in for a review. Item came back and I sent a scan of both the front and back into PSA saying I couldn't afford to spend another $30.00+ on the panel, and needed some kind of explanation as to the "authentic" grade.

Sonia Luque replied and agreed to have me send it in for a review at no charge, so I will be doing that.

In the end I am happy that they will look at my item again, but it seems that the smart thing to do would have been for them to have taken a look at it when I called. I feel that this particular complaint is quite different than disagreeing with a cards grade from a 5 to a 7 for example. "Authentic" grade to me means the item is nearly obliterated. I have seen 2's that look like they were run over by a truck.

On your Ryan, all they really could have told you was that the grader felt the card was trimmed. Yes specific information would be nice! After all, on a trimmed card, they do not issue a voucher, so letting us know where the card's problem is would be nice.

I still feel PSA is the best TPG company available.

    Good luck.

Not sure if my eyes are simply playing tricks, but the upper and lower left corners on the Ryan card look like they might have the slightest "bat wings", not sure if thats what they are referred to.
