1973 set in all 9's, done!

Finally got the last card I needed to complete the 1973 set in all 9's or higher. Don't believe that has been done before, the Unser 9 has made it next to impossible. The final card I needed was the high series checklist. I had subbed four of them over the last few months, 3 came back 8's and the other graded 9 OC. Last week board member Hammered (Matt) PM'd asking if I still needed that card, he had just popped a 9 on one of his subs. I owe a great deal of thanks to Matt for helping not only with the final card but also with a few other very tough low pops over the last year or so. Also board member PSA Rich helped out with six tougher cards when I was still 20 or so from the finish line. Pretty sure the last five cards I needed were #259 Holt, #449 Indians Manager, #549 Rangers Manager, #588 Checklist, and #593 Royals Manager.

    That's quite an accomplishment. Congrats!
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Very impressive. Are you planning to continue to upgrade or are you happy where it is now?

    Nice job Dave
Very tough cards in that set and 588 is one of the toughest. No idea how many I've sent in over the years, mostly they would get 7's
    Congratulations on completing the set
  • Thanks for all of the kind comments. Sonny, I gave up the fight on the 83's but kept at this one. And Henry we won't have to go head to head on any low pop 9's anymore! I think I'll continue to upgrade but won't feel compelled to over pay for a 10 at this point. I mentioned a few of the board members that helped me out with this set, but I omitted Mr. G (Mike) who was kind enough to sell me a few of the 10's I had been looking for.

haha! I didn't even think of that Dave, yah I guess you have been my single biggest stumbling block getting my set to all 9s image I have been working on the whole decade so I usually just throw my bids out and scramble to the next year. I'm about 30-40 away but it might as well be 300 based on how hard some of them are. I am sure we will run into each other on some 10s though image

What an incredible collecting accomplishment - congratulations!

How long did it take you to complete, from start to finish?

And I don't expect you to share the information (I certainly wouldn't), but do you know how much you spent to complete it?

I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!

Very impressive even though you bumped me down a notch! The registry is so much fun, but the challenge and sense of accomplishment really fuel the drive. Great job.

    Incredible.

Sorry Mr. Spence, but you have been demoted.
  • Hello Dave and congrats on the minty set! It took me 3 years to finish mine, and I'm currently #5 on the Current Finest List. I was lucky enough to have about 350 high-end wax packs to build the core of my set with, so I know about the hard work and dedication that it takes to finish this set! Outstanding accomplishment!
