Going for the PSA GEM MT 10...

I've been submitting to PSA for about a year now with very mixed results overall.

Recently my personal grading eye seems to have made a quantum leap. I'm not sure why
exactly, probably just being much more particular about centering and surface issues.

The tips I've gleaned from the posters in this forum have also helped, so thank you
all for sharing your knowledge and expertise.

This is my latest submission which just popped earlier today:

Very nice! If you are like I am, getting those PSA 10s will intensify your search to find even more.

Now to get those rare PSA 11's.

  • Wow indeed. That has to be some sort of record. Did you pull those cards all from the same box - meaning all the 1989/1990/1991 Topps from the same box - case? Tell us your secret. lol
  • The 1989 Topps came from a six-box rack pack case, 1991 Topps from a 20-box wax case. All from BBCE in the last six months. My current process is to rip the packs, insert good guys into penny sleeves, then come back and review later when they've cooled off a bit. When I do, I am ruthless about flaws that can prevent a 10. It's the only way.

I'm getting ready to do another submission in April, mostly 1988-91 Topps again. I'd like to get all the Hall-Of-Famers in those sets in PSA 10 if possible.

But some cards are just brutal. 1990 Griffey Jr. and 1990 Sandberg are particularly tough in PSA 10. And I always have trouble with Ripken in any of these sets.

I've subbed several Griffeys and Sandebergs from '90 Topps. I know I never popped a Griffey, not sure about Ryno. I did own a '90 Griffey in 10 when it was a pop 4. Sold at the right time.

Wow the PSA 10 Nolan Ryan sells for more then the Tiffany version.

    Pretty interesting.

  • Thanks guys for your encouragement. One of my goals of this thread was to inspire someone else to do the same.

  • The 1991 Ryan is one of my favorite Topps cards of that era. It's usually centered badly left/right. I had 20 from my wax case
and picked the right four evidently, but probably only 8 of those 20 were even worth considering due to centering.

Woof! You just inspired me! I've got a ton of cards from 77, 79, and 80 I wanna go through during my spring break. Probably not expecting 10s, but would like to hit on some low pop 9's. Still waiting on my loupe so I can figure out what makes a card "perfect"

    Keep up the good work!

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
