Question for the board about rookie cards..

I noticed today that an 1997 auto of Tony Gonzalez sold for $25. This got me thinking, why do people pay so much more for the newer rookies. Why does Lebron rookies sell for more than Magic/Bird rookies, Alcinder rookies? Why do RGIII cards selling for more than most Unitas/Namath/Bradshaw/Staubach rookies. It just doesn't make sense. I too am guilty of some of this. I realized that cards number /25 or lower have a significant premium, but some of these guys have not and will not come close to these guys. Let me know your thoughts.
Work hard and you will succeed!!

Remember Beanie Babies? I still remember giving the dealers a hard time when I saw them selling them. Their response was that people were willing to spend stupidly on them, so the dealers were going to sell them while it lasted.
It simply baffles me to see the prices people are willing to pay for cards of the newest players. Most players don't pan out or get injured.
Mark Prior is the last one that comes to mind, but there have been many others.
Lebron has been around long enough, he is looking like a pretty safe buy, but those Bird/Majic rookies are gold in high grade.
