1976 Topps Walter Payton Grading??

I received my 1976 Topps Walter Payton RC from being graded. It was graded as a PSA 9 MC. I understand the MC = Miscut but does it lower the value of the card? What is this card worth?

I think most will reply that it has the value of a psa 7 or so.

The Qualifier probably takes the card from ~$675.00 down to anywhere from $150.00 - $250.00, depending on what it looks like.

  • WOW..that hurts! I'm NO expert but I could'nt see that it was miscut. The card is in Mint condition!

  • Between this and my 1958 Topps Jim Brown RC being graded as a PSA 3...Well, let's just say I'm learning the hard way!

  • Welcome to the Board and don't feel bad, most of us have gone through exactly what you are. Learning to understand the game of grading takes a long time. This board is filled with posts of lots of the same experiences. Use those to help you learn what to look for in advance.

And enjoy collecting for what it is to you.

I learned the hard way on my first submission of a Gretzky rookie.

  • Good Point! I collect for my enjoyment! Me and my two young boys love the cards. They like opening the new cards...me I like looking for the older cards. But it's something we enjoy together and something I will leave for them down the road! Thanks for all the help!

  • Last dumb question...Which card is more valuable? The 1958 Topps Jim Brown RC PSA 3 or the 1976 Walter Payton RC PSA 9 MC?

As mentioned, for registry purposes a Miscut (MC) qualifier with knock down a PSA 9 to the equivalent of a PSA 7. However, for monetary purposes, it depends on the severity and location of the MC. If it's on the back and the front is nicely-centered, then you could probably get a decent price, if its an extreme miscut or looks bad on the front, your target audience is going to be very limited. A PSA 9OC sells for a fraction of a PSA 9. A PSA 9MC will likely sell for a fraction of that.

This is the only MC card I own and the MC doesn't really bother me too much because of how straight and clean it looks.

  • I don't recall it being miscut like yours...I will try to post a picture.

That's a good idea. Let us see the front and back and we could probably give you a better estimate of the value.

You are probably looking at $150.00 on the Jim Brown.

As has been stated previously, we have all overestimated the grades of our cards when we first began sending them in for grading. Don't let that bother you ... enjoy collecting with your sons ... you CAN'T put a price on that!

If you couldnt see the card was MC like you are saying. Im guessing the front is centered well, correct? If so check the back of the card. Is it off centered to where you can see the start of another cards back? It can be even just a MM s worth showing to also get a MC grade. Here is a good example of what Im talking about.
    IM having trouble with photobucket.
Ill try and get the pic working. But the front is centered 60-40 or so and Its a PSA 7 MC but the back just has a tip of a cards back showing.

probably an oc if it was the front only. the back is mc as it shows no border at at. a sliver would have been ok for aoc.

Love both cards. Even if you are disappointed, they are both still really nice cards to have in your collection. Id like to get a brown rookie in a similar grade eventually.
    What I Collect:

PSA Pro Football HOF Rookie Players Set Registry- (Currently 19.80% Complete)

I have sold 3 in the past year. Two of them graded at 5 and 6. The 5 sold I think in the area of $80, while the 6 sold around $130. Both were off center, but nice edges and corners. The third one I had was raw, which was well centered, but not as nice around the corners and edges, sold for $75.

So a 9 (MC) might go for $200 depending on how it looks.

Maybe it's the angle of the photo, but those bottom corners look fairly worn down. Do they square up to the naked eye?

I had several cards come back "miscut" that looked fine to me. Sent them back in and EVERY ONE ended up graded without the miscut.

Have inquired on these boards several times how this could happen, but no one has ventured a guess to this point.

Send it back in, you will probably get a straight 8 or even a 9.

    Love to see a scan!!!!

  • Corners are sharp... I have a plastic sleeve on the cards!

Should I really consider resubmitting the Payton? How do you open those cases?

Based on that pic, I wouldn't crack the Payton out of the plastic. It will probably come back either MC or OC so I would just sell it as is.

Decent cards. I would sell them both and get yourself ONE card without any major issues.
The Payton has sold for $272 on average with a qualifier (mc, o/c).
The Brown in a PSA 3 holder has sold for $162 on average.

Sell both, get close to $400-425 and buy yourself a PSA 5 to PSA 6 Jim Brown RC.
Or, buy a PSA 8.5 Payton RC and have some money left over.

You have a better chance of higher graded cards retaining their value, than
lower grade cards (Jim Brown 3) or cards with a dreaded qualifier (Payton 9 mc).

    Just my opinion.

  • I would be content dumping the Payton card for the quoted price people have posted.

I can't believe anybody would give more than a couple dollars for that mis-cut card, its junk to me.

Of coarse "label collector's" are pretty stupid, even if I need a Walter Payton Rookie for a registry set
I would never buy a MC card like that. I would rather spend the money on a more eye appealing NM7

Ahhhh! Now this is more like it!
