Help With Roman Coin ID

Hello

I pulled this coin out of a collection that I bought several years ago.
I think that it is a Nummus of Helena from the 320-330 period
It is 14.7 mm and it looks like the letters in the exegue are TRS

Firstly Do I have it right?
Secondly Does anyone have a thought as to value

Thanks in advance

Yep, looks like Helena to me.

Mother of Constantine the Great, later called St. Helena by Christians, after her pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

(Whoops, I started to type "Holey", there. Haha.)

Take a spin through the Helena section on Wildwinds.com if you wanna nail it down farther.

PS- as to value, I dunno exatcly, but the Helena AE4 I had in my old Roman type set was probably in similar condition to yours (with the addition of some nice desert patina), and I paid $45-50-ish for it, if memory serves. Mind you, that was full bore retail.

Wildwinds and closed eBay auctions can give you some auction results to compare it against.

FYI that coin is a bit rare. It features a bust with her wearing a headband. I believe this is the correct attribution:

Helena. AE4. 337-340 AD. Trier. FL IVL HE-LENAE AVG, draped bust right wearing ornamental mantle, necklace and broad hairband / PA-X PV-BLICA, Pax standing left holding branch and transverse sceptre. Mintmark TRS palmbranch. RIC VIII Trier 90 var (headband), Sear 3910 var.

I could be worth more then a regular helena but ancients are funny that way, if ebayed it could be low due to the reverse.

This coin also has a die clash, which I am a huge fan of on any coin but most ancient collectors look at it as a negative.
  • Wow! I love this forum!

    Thanks guys.

I think I will list it on the BST, rather than the bay.

    Thanks again.

    Chris

If I didnt have one I would buy it in a flash for the die clash but mines a common higher grade & I dont wanna part with it. :/

I dont like having dual emperors or empresses unless I like them alot.
