Anyone deal with eBay seller great_lakes_auction_house?

They seem to have a lot of high end raw 1950s cards of HOFers available.eBay

  • There are many past threads about them. They buy EX-EXMT graded cards that present well for the grade, crack them out, sell them raw, and talk up the best attributes of the card. They don't specifically give an opinion on grade, but the auction description and photos are typically framed to make you think you are getting a NM, NM-MINT, or MINT card.

    IOW, stay far away.

Do a search on this forum...cards typically aren't as nice as they look.
Looking for rare Randy Moss rookies and autos, as well as '97 PMG Red Football cards for my set.
  • I also learned the hard way from buying from them. In my case, it was a 1952 Pafko, and in the description were many words like tremendous, faint touch on corners, fantastic color & surface, etc....You also could not enlarge the picture. I buy the card and was immediately disapointed when I opened the package. I sent it to PSA and it came back a 3. I emailed them and they did offer a partial refund of $50. This was a long time back and Paypal wasn't quite as buyer oriented as they are now, so I accepted the refund. Chalked it up to a learning lesson. So allthough they did offer a partial refund, the card was not near in the condition they make you think. They use many subjective words in describing their cards that are not always used in the industry.

Don't do it. Couple of years back I grabbed a card from them. They did indeed talk up the card's best attributes, advertising it as NM. When I received it, on the back of the card it had a nice surface wrinkle on the back. Would of landed the card into a 4 slab if I didn't send it back.

    Beware...

  • Their auctions are private. Makes me wonder if there is shill bidding going on in their auctions.

Thanks to all. Besides the entertainment value, this is one of the great things about these boards. The sharing of knowledge and experiences.

I will stay away. Seemed odd that such good cards would not be sent for grading as the prices realized would be much higher.

i read the descriptions of their auctions and added the voice of Brent Musburger to the narrative.

then it was easy to walk away.

Good Assessment. I've bought a couple raw cars from them. I love the descriptions. Most of the cards are definitely Ex/Exmt. If you can pick up a nice raw exmt card for a good price then give them a try. I recently bought a 66 mantle and a 57 Banks from them at what i felt was a good price and was happy with the cards. I have had good success buying raw cards from Gregg Morris, Techmarina, and Uncle Bill's auction house. As we have all heard before when buying raw cards check them out as close as possible and bid accordingly. Most of the bigger dealers want good feedback so if you're not happy with the card send it back.I have

They were the buyers of my 1953 Mantle #82 PSA 1 that looked like a PSA 3 or higher. Any guesses as to what happened to the card???

Cracked-out and sold raw as Very Good?

Probably...and I would think nowhere near as large of a scan as I showed in the PSA case.

I have a 1956 Jackie Robinson that is a PSA 3 and has the exact same corners as that Mantle, but no crease or surface wrinkle. So I don't see how that Mantle gets a 3 with the corners combined with the crease. The 1 doesn't seem fair though either as I've seen worse 2's.

Anyway, this is a really great thread. One of the most useful I've seen posted on any board. Good specific information, sharing others experiences to help out someone else.

Card isn't for sale, card has already sold. It sold two months ago. The time you were referring to, it was NOT for sale. When the card WAS on Ebay, I didn't HAVE to tout it, because the card speaks for itself. I never ran an ad on BST saying that the card was up for auction. 'Nuff said.....

.....you can go back to your hole now, there is nothing to see here.

Now, have I got to ask your permission in the future before I sell any of my cards? If so, let me know.
