HELP PLEASE: PayPal and Off ebay transaction

Hey guys ... I had someone contact me agreeing to purchase an item ($600.00) in an off eBay transaction. I figured I'd go the PayPal route and all would be fine.
I just noticed this ... the guy as an eBay score of 157 and 100% feedback. HOWEVER, he has NO FEEDBACK in FOUR YEARS!!!!
Should I be suspicious? How do I protect myself? If we do this off eBay ... and I tell him to send me $600.00 thru PayPal ... is there any way he can try to get his money back?
One recommendation was to ask for PP gift and send with Signature Confirmation. Anybody know the best way to conduct this transaction? Thanks!

If he's willing to send PP Gift, fantastic! You are not going to be responsible, as it is a gift, he gives up pretty much all rights.
If he wants to send "regular" paypal, just send it with at least Sig Conformation and C.Y.A. as you would with any "normal"
PayPal transaction. ive done plenty of transactions buying via paypal where eBay was not involved.

Exactly what Eric said. I doubt he would want to go the paypal gift route though as I wouldn't if I were in his shoes not knowing you. Your protection is the same as a regular eBay transaction. It could be that this is the way he conducts business, trolling eBay for stuff he wants and doing it off eBay to get a break on the price as you are saving any eBay fees associated with the transaction. Signature confirmation is the way to go.
