Ryan, Rose, Rickey, and Ripken seem to go for a nice price in 10, good luck!! image

Good luck ripping. I have opened 3 of these same cases this past summer and it was fun. I was looking for a rack with Mattingly on top, and didn't get one in 3 cases!
  • I would LOVE to rip that box. I would have so much fun doing so being how those were the 1st baseball cards I ever got my little paws on at the time. Goodluck.

Lets see some scans/photos hopefully by tonight please.

The only sale of a PSA 10 1986 Topps Sandberg was auctioned recently for $2,600 with buyers premium. It's a POP 2, the other resides here, it my clenched fists:

1986 Topps is a great set design, love the partial black borders and clean font. Wish it had a big name rookie to make it more popular, then again, that probably keeps the price low.

    Enjoy your rip!

Started to rip last night. Only got through one box. It is a blast. It was one of the first years I was actively buying cards as well. Nice to see others that have some nostalgia around this set as well.

Good luck ripping. I have opened 3 of these same cases this past summer and it was fun. I was looking for a rack with Mattingly on top, and didn't get one in 3 cases!

If I find one with Mattingly on top I will let you know. Found one with Ryan. The cards are in great shape too. So, it's just a matter of centering. I'm hoping it is a sign of good things to come, but my favorite player growing up was Dale Murphy and the top pack had his all star card on top, so I was pumped about that. Here are a couple of pictures to start. I will scan some of the hits after work tonight, and will keep ripping.

boxes were packed in nice, and in good shape.

Got about a box and 1/2 opened. Got almost every hall of famer. 3 Ryan's, 3 Sandbergs, 3 Roses. Not one Ripken other than the all star yet though. I also realized why the Sandberg is so tough. Top to bottom centering is an issue, and 2 of the three have a chipped edge. Not sure if it will show up in the pictures, but it looks like a problem with the cut. Ironically, I haven't found one other card in the entire box that has the similar edge chip other than 2 Sandbergs. Here are some pictures. Any advice on which to send in for grading would be appreciated.

Here are the 3 Sandbergs -2 with a messed up edge

  • I've been flirting with breaking 86 topps racks for a while. Enjoying your thread. Good luck. It was my first real set - the year I got serious about cards.
Mattingly is my favorite too. Keep us posted.

The Mattingly may be in the same cell as the All-Star cards. If so, he may not show on top unless there is a pack miswrap.

I recently opened a 3-box rack and had some nice cards. I'd send in the stars tht have a shot at a 10. Rushhead12 on the boards has a list he's looking to fill. Send him a PM. I'm sending in a Guerrero All-star for one of the board members. He is needing one more All-star card to complete his set.

Nice Ryan rack. It looks like you have decent centering. Keep ripping and posting.

The scans do seem to have pretty nice centering, which is half the battle with 86 topps.

Now, chipping, black borders, corners are going to be a challenge as well. I love the Nolan Ryan card, very nice colors and his no-nonsense facial expression kind-of sums up his career.

    Resisting buying a case myself.

I think that might be correct in regards to the Mattingly. I did find a rack with the standard Mattingly all star on top (not the insert set). The centering overall has been a little hit or miss, but I have found some pretty nice ones so I've been satisfied. I think I have a Ripken and a Rose that have a shot at a 10. One of the Ryan's is pretty nice as well, but has a tiny bit of a slant to it. I will post some more pictures later, and rip another box as well. I have to say for the price I really like the 86 topps. Some tough cards to hunt for, but lots of star power, so it makes for a fun adventure.

Centering does look good for you, much better than what I had to deal with. 3 cases netted me no gradable cards, horrible centering, and I was only able to put together 6 quality sets. Thankfully I got the cases at a reasonable price. They aren't cheap anymore, when they come up at least. Still have some left unopened, pretty sure they are going to stay that way.

As for the Mattingly-- just looked over the packs with stars showing that I didn't open. I have one with him showing on the bottom, he is in the middle cell. I have some packs with the All Star cards in the far right cell, so it seems he is not in the All Star cell?

Good luck with the rest of your rip. Are you leaving any packs unopened with stars showing?

I have been saving most of the packs that have hall of famers on top (other than the commemorative all star card). I think I have Rice, Nolan, Murray, Eckersley, Winfield, and Don Sutton. I've also saved two with my favorite player Dale Murphy on them. One was the commemorative all star and the other has the Braves leader card on top.

Time4aGansett - That is really bad luck. 3 cases and nothing ? At least you got some nice sets out of it, and since it is an affordable case, you didn't break the bank in the process.

RynoandBo - totally agree on the borders, printing, and centering make this a tough year to find gems. I was wondering if your Sandberg has any print dots ? All of mine seem to have them, and I'm not sure if PSA will give you a 10 if there are any print dots.

Here are some more scans. I'm particularly happy with the Ripkens. They are both really sharp. One of the Rickey's is pretty spot on as well. Having a blast with this rip.

    Ryno

The middle one has the best centering but there is the slightest bit of chipping on the bottom left edge near the corner. Almost makes it look like a strange cut.

No shot on a 10 for the Ryno group. All have the terrible surface. My 10 has a nice clean front.

Check out this GEM! This was pack fresh, and I had to get it slabbed to remind myself never to buy this stuff again hoping for a Ryno 10!

I was hoping for the gum stain qualifier, but PSA had mercy on me. Keep posting those pics, 1986 Topps is great!

76- The print dots will absolutely keep the Sandberg's out of a 10 holder, and I would suspect that's been the main reason why there are only 2 so far. The cut issue you pointed out earlier is interesting in that your 2 Sandberg's both had identical indentions on the right side. But....if that were the common problem with all the Sandbergs, then you wouldn't see any 8's or 9's either...they'd all be 4's and 5's which isn't the case. And based on the fact that some of your Sandberg's have centering that is within the realm of 10 quality... that leads me to the conclusion that the print dots are the over-riding problem with the card. If you're a big Murphy fan, you're probably aware of the same issue on 87 Topps Murphy. Its a repetitive print dot problem.

All done ripping. Pretty satisfied with what I got. I had a lot of fun with the break, and learned a lot about how tough it is to find high grade examples of a lot of the cards in this set especially the Sandberg. I also had particular trouble with the Gwynn, Dykstra, and Mattingly. Here are some scans of the cards I'm going to submit and my favorite pack from the case. Feel free to comment on the cards, I'm pretty much submitting with the hopes of landing some 10's, so if you see any that aren't even worth submitting let me know, any advice is appreciated, and thanks for following along.

Star box - nolan, brett, rose/carter, sutton, winfield, eckersley, rice, mattingly all star, fielder rc, (and a couple more hofamers on top that I can't think of)
    image

Dykstra and Sandberg - only somewhat centered Dykstra in the whole case, and best example of Sandberg. All had the print dots

    Charlie Hustle
    image

    Iron man

    Rickey

Nolan - got 6 of these that are all nice. Probably most satisfied with the quantity and quality of the Ryan's in the case.

And this guy. My favorite pack of the case. Rose, and two hall of famers, hard to beat that combination.

Hard to tell from the pics which are worth grading. Be careful, from experience, they better be near perfect. If not, you are looking at PSA 8 land....worthless.

The Nolan Ryan cards are good to sub, a psa 9 will land $10-15 bucks on ebay, a 10 at about $250.

On a side note, while the Ryno is very hard.....what did your Bo Diaz cards look like? I have opened tons of this stuff, and the Bo Diaz is in my experience even harder than the Sandberg.

whos on the back Just commons - 536- Rijo 792 - Hudson and 287 Christensen. I did get a 2nd pack with Nolan Ryan on the front along with the ozzie all star card, that also has Dale Murphy on the back, so that pack is a close 2nd as my favorite.

what did your Bo Diaz cards look like? - haha, funny you should ask. Out of the case, I threw 3 cards right in the trash with the wrappers, and one was a Diaz. It was so badly miscut you could barely read his name. The others were all OC as well, unless one got by me that I don't remember. The other one I remember having a lot of centering issues throughout the case was Fred Lynn. A lot had printing problems, but my favorites were Danny Cox and Nelson Simmons. The printing is so bad it looks like someone threw paint on them.

Just landed 10s on Brett and Ripken, with 9s on Sandberg, Murphy, and Mattingly from past rack breaks. Really enjoy chasing these black borders.

Need to check the Diaz cards. Never paid much attention to those.

    David (LD_Ferg),

Nice work on the Brett and Ripken. I was wondering, does your Brett have any white print dots in the team name "Royals" ? All of my Brett's do. Other than that I have one pretty nice one that I would think about subbing. Yeah, these are fun to chase.

Cards just popped today, I have to admit I'm a little disappointed, not one 10. I submitted pretty much the 12 best that I had, as far as star cards. Still can't believe that none of the Ryan's or Ripken's were a 10. What is always frustrating to me is that I can never determine the difference between a 9 or a 10. I'm not surprised by the Sandberg, I pretty much thought it would only be an 8 or a 9, but decided to sub the best one that I got, to see what it would grade. I own and have seen some blazing 9's, and also seen quite a few 10's that I don't understand how they got into their holders. Anyway, here are my grades.

If you feel you have some 10s there, send them in again.
The biggest mistake some make is to take the first grader's opinion as the final authority on their submitted cards.
If one Ryan PSA 10 sells for 250, spending another $20 to sub those three Ryans again might make sense.
