1974 Yamakatsu poppage Andre the Giant rookie bruce lee chuck norris scans added

I initially sent these card in Sept/Oct of last year.. I subbed them with a bgs mod who was extremely helpful and patient through all of this. It took a lot of back and forth between him, myself and bgs but we finally got them slabbed. I still think these should be labeled 1974 rather than 76 but ill take it for now. Not sure if they shipped yet so there might be a chance it gets changed but this is how they are labeled for now.. Big thanks again to the guys who helped with this.. Wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for sumomenkoman

Yeah looking forward to getting them in hand. I was expecting one of the andres to get a pretty low grade but didn't think the others were that bad. My guess is they got dinged for centering... But it was such a hard process.. I'm really just happy they were slabbed. Ill post some scans when I get them back.

Nice grades, but its really a shame about the mislabeling of the holders on the Andre cards.

Pretty frustrating that BGS didn't wait a few hours to discuss with me before slabbing and then went ahead and mislabeled them as 1976 instead of 1974. Not sure what compelling evidence they were using. Here is some of the research I sent them to show that it's from 1974:

The cards Chad sent in are from the 1974 Yamakatsu New Japan Pro Wrestling Set and this set isn't from 1976. The reason I say this set is from 1974 is because all the wrestlers depicted on the cards fought at various times from Oct 1973 - June 1974 with NJPW and there are several references to the 1973 and 1974 dates on the back of some cards. If these cards were from 1975 or later there would have been a whole different slew of wrestlers on cards from this set. Here is some specific research to back up the 1974 date:

Card #2: Bill White - He fought extensively from Oct-Dec 1973 with NJPW. He never even was part of the NJPW card in late 1975 or 1976.

Card #4: Yamaha Brothers(Hishino/Yamamoto) - They were a tag team pair in March 1973 and then in the late 1970s formed back up.

Card #5: Killer karl Krupp - He wrestled extensively with NJPW in April-May 1974.

Card #9: John Tolos - The photo on this card was taken when John was wrestling as a gues in January 1974 with NJPW. He never wrestled in 1976 with NJPW.

Card #11: von Schotz and von Hess - They fought extensively as a pair in May-June 1974 with NJPW. They never wrestled for NJPW in 1976

Card #13: McGwire Brothers - They were a tag team pair in Jan-Feb 1974 with NJPW. They never wrestled with NJPW in 1976.

Card #14: Inoki vs Gotch - This is from when Gotch was touring with NJPW in October of 1973. They never wrestled each other in 1976

Card #16: Inoki vs Gotch - This is from when Gotch was touring with NJPW in October of 1973. They never wrestled each other in 1976

Card #18: Victor Rivera - Rivera fought extensively in Oct 1973 with NJPW.

Card #21: McGwire Brothers - They were a tag team pair in Jan-Feb 1974 with NJPW. They never wrestled with NJPW in 1976.

Card #23: Inoki vs Singh match - This was a famous match from 26 June 1974 between Inoki and Singh as depicted on the card back.

Card #25: Andre the Giant - This card is of Andre during a match from the Feb-March Big Fight Series which Andre was the starring guest wrestler. He never wrestled with the NJPW in 1976 that I am aware.

Card #26: Johnny Powers - He wrestled extensively in Dec 1973 for NJPW.

Card #29: Andre the Giant - This card was taken from the Feb-March Big Fight Series. A similar photo is depicted in the April 1974 issue of the Japanese Magazine "Ring".

Card #30: Inoki vs Singh match - This was a famous match from 26 June 1974 between Inoki and Singh as depicted on the card back.

Card #35: Royal Kangaroos - They were a tag team extensively in Feb-March 1974 with NJPW. They never even wrestled in 1976 or late 1975 with NJPW.

Card #38: Stan Stasiak - This card is from the April-May 1974 World League tour in which he was a guest wrestler. He never wrestled in 1976 with NJPW.

On a happier note, I'm really glad I could help get these graded. Can't wait to see how they look.

Wow. Great info. Thanks again. It's pretty annoying that I stressed to them I don't care about turn around time just please be sure to label everything correctly. It's a step in the right direction though. Once I get the cards back ill contact them and see if I can get them corrected. It literally took 6 months just to get them comfortable enough to slab them period. To their credit.. At least they were willing to work on these and slab them at all. Psa gave me some terrible excuse that since the backs are all in Japanese they can't grade them. Which was the most ridiculous reason I've heard especially when they have an entire section in the pop report for Japanese cards.

Andre has 2 cards. #25 and #29. 25 is a shot of him about to press slam someone the other one is a color shot that is very similar to the 73 magazine cut out " card".

I just heard back from bgs on these.. The good news is that they agree to change the date to 74. The bad news is that they were already shipped... So I will have to send them back to get reslabbed. Going forward anyone that has any of these should be able to sub them to bgs without any issues. I've been actively looking for these for the past year or so and have not been able to find any more. I've talked to a few Japanese sellers and no luck. The difficulty with foreign issues is that it tough to say if the cards are truly rare or just rare in the US. Sumoman could is prob a better resource but from I've seen these are pretty rare. I'm still waiting to see a Andre with the gold foil on the back.

That's great news that they decided to grade them. I only know of about 12 or so of these Andre cards. They are really rare. I wish I could find some of the 1976 AJPW. Those cards are really hard to find. Even more so than the 1974 NJPW. The Destroyer would be a pretty sweet card. And I'd love to see a gold stamp Andre from the 1974 set. In fact any gold-foil card in the set would be pretty cool!
  • eagles33eagles33 Posts: 2,683 ✭✭✭
Yeah... I wish it could have been corrected before they shipped them back but considering the hoops i had to jump through to even get them slabbed in the first place I guess it's not that bad. I would be interested to see how the foil cards would be labeled. Have ever seen any without being Xed out?

Tix Stub from 1982 Japan Match w/ Andre
  • eagles33eagles33 Posts: 2,683 ✭✭✭
Yeah i saw that.. It would be very interesting to find a hulk hogan card pre 1982. I know there is a Japanese magazine from 1982 that had cards meant to be hand cut. They were true cards like the 85 all stars not paper cards like the 81 and 73. The seller that I got my Pacquiao card had it for sale but I forgot about the auction and missed out. There are also several Andre cards made around 1978. I believe they were all from matches that were in the movie "inside the square jungle". I've seen a few different sets. Some were smaller cards like the yamakatsu while others were closer to a postcard size. These are kinda interesting too but all produced by unknown manufacturers so it wasn't possible to get them slabbed. My ability to research them is pretty limited though considering I can't read or understand Japanese.

Sumoman, are you aware of any other sets between 76 and 82 that are similar to the 74 and 76 sets? Particularly any that contain hogan or flair? I know flair had some hand cut disc but not really a true card

The 1978 cards are made by Amada...1978 Amada Kings of the Square Ring. There are 4 Andre cards in that set and they are approximately the size of the 1974 and 1976 Yamakatsu sets. They are documented in my book as well. I haven't heard about any early Hogan cards in magazines, but I haven't looked too closely. Any other info for me to start a search?

The ones I have are the post card size ones. The Andre is pretty cool. I didn't really have any info on it so couldn't get it slabbed. I think the 78 set you are describing would a good shot at getting slabbed. I don't gave any more info on the hogan. Unfortunately the auction was to old and I can't find it.

Ill get a better scan of this tomorrow but this is an example of the one had

The back says he was 225 cm tall, 230 kilograms and was born in 1946 in Spain(I thought he was born in FRance?). It says he made his wrestling debut at the age of 17. I can't read the rest because if the flash.

Thanks. I think getting them slabbed and labeled correctly will help bring some awareness to the set. The 74 set really has two big cards.. the Andre rookie and Inoki rookie. I'm not to familiar with any of the other names in the set. The 76 set has rookie cards of Harley race, terry and Dory funk, the destroyer, and Pedro morales.

My order has been logged at bgs and the due date is today so I should get them back soon. Beckett has logged the set to their database so I think psa will allow a crossover. I'm still speaking to them about it. Here is the info at Beckett. They also have the 76 set

Sumo, have you tracked down any of the 3 missing cards in the 74 set? I wonder if one of them is another Andre card. Also, do you plan on subbing any of the "winner" cards? Even though they are " Xed"out I think it would be cool to see his they are labeled.

I'm not sure what the last three cards will be, but I have a few ideas. Not sure Andre is one of them.

I really wonder how PSA would graded X-ed out Winner Cards. I would imagine they would get a qualifier on them if anything.

Glad you got the cards reslabbed! We are finally making headway on this set for sure! So close. I was thinking I'd just send in a copy of my book with my PSA order and let them keep the book. Probably quicker than them trying to order a copy and going through their internal processes.

I think the first card of a guy that competed in the UFC as we know it is Dan Severn. His rookie is a 1990 Arizona State Collegiate Collection card. I just sold my PSA 10 (Pop 1) to another board member. I did keep my red flip signed card. Not a real expensive card but seems to have some historical significance for the sport.

It was a combination of the scans from your book and a link to the beckett website that listed the entire checklist. I have to send a bunch of emails with my initial sub and prob field a few questions.. But if should be all set. Ill be looking forward seeing them slabbed and in the pop report. The card I'm most interested in seeing surface is a Andre gold foil card. I hope one pops up some day

Yes, me too! Considering how rare winner stamps are and then how much rarer uncancelled ones are.....and then to find an uncancelled one on an Andre card is mindblowing considering how few of all these cards there are out there. So yes, I'll believe it when I see it too!
