8 1/2 x 11 top loaders are slightly bigger and much wider but they provide
    good protection

I also use these but put the rack in a comic book sleeve with cardboard backing first so they don't move around.

  • What I do with mine is I just place them in those 900 count cardboard boxes. Fits perfectly in there and no wiggle room really.
  • The lack of availability for a rack pack holder is a matter of cost. To tool up and make a soft plastic holder like a GAI holder is extremely expensive and would probably require a run of 50,000 or more units. That's a big nut to crack. To make a hard acrylic holder like PSA uses is prohibitively expensive. I mean, in the stratosphere. Because of this cost I highly doubt PSA will do racks simply because the volume isn't there to support the investment. That doesn't mean that some of us aren't working on a solution of some sort. I have some questions to ask rack collectors that I will start in another thread soon.

Edit to add this is strictly about a protective holder for racks.

Are you really able to fit a rack pack in an 8.5 x 11? I originally thought to try that size but after measuring I went with 11 x 14. It is obviously even bigger but will protect a little and can be displayed. I guess since the newer racks don't use a cardboard header you can fold it under but with racks with the cardboard header measure over 12 inches end to end.

If "one" was going to design a rack holder, what size would you recommend? And would the header fold under?

I would prefer one that displays the header. But I aint real picky, either way would work for me.
A question, on some of the older racks with cardboard headers, would folding them over rip or tear
the cellophane? Just curious, dont know.

I am seriously going to investigate if a top-loader could be made.

Curious what people think about the header being folded or kept straight and how thick you think it should be.

Cool, I would be a buyer of several. What do you guys think about keeping this at the top of
the page for a few days to get as many peoples ideas as possible. EchoCanyon, email me if
you need any help or anything. I would love to have some of these.

    Lets have some opinions guys.

I believe the header should be kept straight, as the card it folds over may be the one that you want to display. Plus I think it would look nicer. I would definitely be interested in these.

I'm glad to hear your thickness comment. The other reason I like the 11 x 14 is that it doesn't squeeze the pack as much as an 8.5 x 11 would. This is also the reason I haven't tried to fit 2 racks in the same 11 x 14. Thickness is a tough call because Rack Packs can be as thick as the '83 Fleer (84 cards) or as thin as a <gulp> Xmas rack pack (12 cards)...... ok pretend I didn't say that.... I mean '74 football which has 36 cards.

EDIT: to say that I'm really excited to hear that you plan to pursue this. I'm sure there are MANY folks on this board that would be interested. Now.... If it were just the year 2020 we could all fabricate it tonight on our HP DimensionJet 3D Printer and see who came up with the best design!
  • I have about 15 racks at the moment I would like to display, is this a future reality, or just a pipe dream? I would be willing to spend up to $10 each but have no idea how much someone would even charge if they ever decided to sell them in semi-bulk. Also, are the 11x14 toploaders really that effective at containing and protecting the entire rack pack?

I would measure one up for ya but all mine are at my brothers house. I assume by
now you have got measurements though.

I have all intention of developing a proto-type top loader for rack packs and seeing what it would cost to have them made. I do have a fried who has manufactured thru China and I will look at that as an option.

This 1978 Rack is 12.75" X a touch over 4.75" (sorry for the bad cellphone pic but I wanted to get the whole toploader)

Does anyone have a picture of their rack pack in one of these top loaders?

    Edit
It looks like 1all's post on page one shows the football rack in a top loader

Funny you should ask.....I'm meeting a couple of interesting fellows on Saturday. One is a product designer. The other is an entrepreneur, who has had things produced thru China. I'll let you know.

I don't see why these can't be made by a regular card supply manufacturer. I see individual top loads thick enough to handle the width of a rack pack and they make magazine top loads that are just as thick and obviously taller than a rack so it seems one would just need to alter the dimensions?

GAI tried out some new rack holders a few years back. I picked up a few at the National that year. They've worked out great for display and storage purposes.
