Stop the Panel Madness (again)

Collectors- I have brought to page 1 on the Set Registry Forum a very useful thread from 2009 where we argued and I thought made a final decision regarding the use of Panels in the registry composite.

However, much to my chagrin, when I went back to view the Dale Murphy Master Set composite this evening (1st time in about a year that I've looked at it), I noticed several disturbing entries that seemed to run contrary to the decisions were made.

1) There were multiple entries for '79 Hostess Handcut- Both a single Murphy card, and then a separate required composite spot for a "Murphy panel" with the neighboring card from the Hostess Sheet.

2) There were multiple entries from '87 M&M's Handcut- Both a single Murphy card, and then a separate required composite spot for a "Murphy panel" with the neighboring card (Jose Canseco...jeez) from the M&M's sheet.

3) Perhaps the most egregious was the 1986 Star Set. Its a 12 card set, yet there are a total of 16 required composite slots from the 12-card set due to various "panel variations" that some nitwit decided to submit as a new composite entry.

STOP THE MADNESS folks.... 1 card should have 1 composite slot. Joe and Cosetta ruled on this topic in '09, let's follow those guidelines.

The Hostess I can see, as long as only the entire panel (which can be cut out of the box as a whole) is an option. Those weren't sheet issued; they were the backs of dessert boxes. I'm not a Hostess expert, so I don't know whether Murphy was one, but IIRC some players appeared on 2-card panels on certain Hostess desserts.

If the M&Ms were a sheet, then no way should that be allowed.

If I am not mistaken they decided that the complete panel and the individual card is allowed, but arbitrarily cut panels. The 1987 M&M's were issued in 2 card panels.

Yes. The rules are the card and the original panel!! That's what was decided and that's how it is!!! Nothing has changed at all!!! Nothing!!!!

When I was doing my Mathews Master set, I was rather unhappy that I had to find the cut card as well as the panel that it was originally from. My main issue was with the Bazooka panels, they do this with stamp panels a well as cardboard panels. I tried on several occasions to get them to combine the Bazooka hand cut card and the panel two as one composite but failed each time. It's essentially the same card, twice! For the Bazooka panel, it had two extra players, one on the left and one on the right, that had nothing to do with the player's Master set that I was completeing. Also, it was required that the Mathews card be the center card in the panel. None of this seemed to make sense to them why this was redundant... It was a challenge, but I found them both in the end...though it did cost.

For Hostess cards in the Player Sets you can have 2 card types/slots:
    Slot 1 is for single & non-manufactured combo (either/or)*
*This means that you can have the single cut card or the card on a 2 card panel to fill the requirements of the slot
Slot 2 is for the 3 card panel from manufacturer+
+This means the only item that can fill this slot is the complete 3 card panel

These rules hold true for M&M's, Squirt, Burger King, 61 & 62 Topps Stamps, Topps Box Panels and other similar issues.

If you have a question about a specific issue, LMK or PM me.

    Hope this helps.

Requiring a Dale Murphy collector to have not only the '87 M&M's Murphy card, but also the same '87 M&M's card attached to a Jose Canseco card is about the dumbest thing I've seen.

Logan- I'm not disputing what you said above. However, if that is really where PSA left things, then essentially the debate in 2009 didn't solve the problem, and PSA didn't listen to the wishes of the collectors who posted on the thread and sent them emails. Meh...

Yes Psa did listen in 2009. It's been this way for 3 plus years now. There are no man made panel period. And it's the right way to have it too!
