Seriously: Ebay Rant

So long story short, I had a lady who made me an offer on a card, I accepted. The following day she does not want it and emails me saying "I prefer you reverse the transaction" I respond saying "I prefer you pay for the item you bought" she then leaves me negative feedback. Ebay says they cant remove it because she didnt violate any rules. She never paid for the item. So what ebay is telling me is you can buy an item and with 30 seconds of buying it, leave negative feedback and the seller cant to nothing about it. This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of.

  • eBay has many issues and this is just one of them. The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

it would be equivalent to someone picking up something at the store and putting it in their cart and that once its in the cart the buyer is obligated to purchase it.

now an offer has been made and you accept, then declines to purchase. its a pain in the butt. but ebay has handed to the buyer the power like amazon.

File an NPB. My understanding is that a non-paying bidder cannot leave FB for that auction (or that it will be removed if they already did).

  • That's horrible. Did you try calling them or was that an email response? >>

I just got off the phone with them. 83 minutes later they still have their heads buried in the sand. After talking with two females who couldnt put two english words together, there is nothing they can do. How screwed up is that, you work so hard to keep a good feedback rating and stupid people ruin it.

I just went ahead and relisted the item, and called ebay. They said if I would of filed a NPB they could of but since I just relisted it, they cant.

  • That sucks. I hope you responded to the negative feedback - I always read a sellers negatives and can tell if the buyer is being a jerk by the seller response. I know it doesn't help your percentage though.
  • Can you please out the buyer's ID?
  • This completely stinks. I also don't believe it is eBay policy to allow buyer's to leave negative feedback if they have not paid. Whatever the rules are, I've adopted the policy if anyone asks to cancel a transaction I say sure no problem. Not worth the hassle to go the other route.

I agree. I've had this happen a few times, and it irritates me, but it's not worth the hassle--just cancel, relist and move on..

The item in question was a 2013 Heritage Blue (wal-mart) card. After buying it she accuses me of recoloring the corner and goes on a rant. Leaves negative feedback saying I declared war on her.

Good response. No rational buyer is going to hold that FB against you. Unfortunately, if you are getting a top-rated seller disount, the FB rating could hurt you there.

Bottom line is, dont get upset ebay feedback...once you have over a certain amount, most people dont even look at it unless you have multiples of negatives

People like this make me want to punch kittens.....

Does no one follow the golden rule? I see it sold for $2.50 + $1.50 to this whacko? Is that right? I've regretted purchases before, many as I am bidding them up. If its less than $5 just take the hit and resell it - or guess what RETURN IT.

Not to hijack your thread - but I bought a huge lot of Rangers Stadium Giveaway cards with the intent to resell. Especially for the obscure player collectors out there. It's done quite well in a little over 2 months with 150-200 sales I would guess. 98% go off without a hitch. But it seems one or two a month go off the rails. I'm done with deadbeat buyers. You have 7 days to pay with a reminder email sometime on day 6. After 1 week I file a NPB and block you. If you pay within the 4 days great, I still leave positive feedback and ship your item in 24 hours, but its the last time you will buy from me. If not I close the case, get my fees back and relist.

The thing that I've never understood though is I'm selling most of these things for $1 + $2 shipping - WHY CAN'T YOU PAY ME IMMEDIATELY OR WITHIN 48 HOURS WHEN ITS < $5???? I can find that in my couch!

Its amazing isnt it. I love the ones that make offers on dozens of cards, I accept the offers and have to wait a week to get paid. Those are the best.

All this negativity makes me want to buy something. Off to the BST boards.

This is why you should have just excepted that she wasn't going to pay and simply re-listed it. You can't force people to pay. The transaction isn't complete until the item is paid for and the buyer is satisfied.
  • Whatever happened to bidding and winning in auctions being a legally binding contract. It is not like being in a store and changing your mind before getting to the checkout.
I remember agreeing to Ebay's contract when I signed up 12 years ago that winning an auction was a legally binding contract.
Now it seems bidders can do whatever they want.

Buyer satisfaction is ebay's #1 priority and always will be. What sellers need to understand is that until their items are in the hands of their buyers and those buyers are satisfied, their end of the bargain is incomplete.
  • Well I emailed ebay yesterday about the situation and they removed the negative feedback this morning. I guess someone at ebay still has common sense.

    Hi Dave,
Glad you got the neg removed. As someone who has decided to sell on ebay, I have found that there is absolutely no sense trying to argue with a buyer over just about anything.
Ebay will side with the buyer on most issues and then the buyer might still be able to leave negative feedback.
Unless you are actually being ripped-off buy a buyer, I would just accept all returns and cancel all auctions where the buyer had any complaints.
To answer someone else's question, it's obvious that ebay does NOT require buyers to honor their bids.
    Good luck in the future.

For the most part I agree with you. I recently had an issue where I sold a collectible LP that was sealed to someone. I get an email from them saying it was smudged up and they wanted to return it for a full refund. I refused since the integrity of the album has been compromised being that is was open. I did offer a partial refund. After a little bit of back and forth we agreed that a 50% refund was in order. I sent it right away. A few hours later I see that a case has been opened asking for the rest of the money. I responded as professionally as possible to the case and I was found not at fault but eBay would refund his money in full. I figure, no big deal. Win Win, right? Wrong. He STILL left me a neg. Supposedly on May 1, eBay will remove any negs on auctions where a case was opened and the seller was found not at fault. Time shall tell.

Long story even longer, I agree that most of the time a return is the easiest thing to accept and move on in life. But sometimes, a buyer is just wrong.
I'm building a 1968 and a 1970 Topps set. I have lots of 1970s and 1960s to offer in trade.

<< <i>While the situation stinks, it would be prudent to keep in mind that as soon as some starts to flake on eBay, that is usually just the tip of the iceberg. As soon as you had a request to cancel as they didn't want the item, you were in a no-win situation. Give up, give in, cancel the auction, get the FVF back, relist and move on. Is it really worth "winning" by getting into a pissing contest with someone that has to sit down to participate? What did you win?

Sorry to sound harsh or appear unsympathetic (I really do feel bad that it happened to you), but too often there are posts on these boards about eBay buyers or sellers and when you step back and look at it objectively, you could see the end result coming from a mile away... >>

Ever since I started "flipping" on eBay the past year it has become apparent that the seller can really get screwed.

As a matter of fact, I know it's coming.

At this point, I have dodged bullets by giving in for partial refunds at times so I don't get a negative when I didn't deserve it.

However, I just figure it is the cost of doing business. The cost of doing business on eBay is ALOT IMHO.

I thought it took seven days for a buyer to leave negative feedback? Also, I would file the NPB alert and then call eBay after she doesnt pay.

  • Obviously, Ebay is trying to protect buyers from the dishonest sellers that are out there because they were not well protected many years ago, that resulting into some very negitive press. Now they have gone overboard and do not protect sellers from dishonest buyers. I think what they need to understand, is that not only is the buyer an ebay customer, but the seller is an Ebay customer also and needs to be treated the same. Also a sprinkle of common sense when making decisions between a buyer & seller would be helpful!
