1978 Topps Rack Rip - Uodate - POPPAGE!

Should be getting some 1978 Topps Baseball Rack Packs from BBCE early next week. Am so ready to rip and post that I am already setting up the thread.
1978 was the first year I really bought cards in bulk. I remember nearly pummeling a friend because he grabbed the rack with Ron Guidry on top before I could! We got kicked out of Newberry's for that.

For some reason, I have a ton of '78 Burger King Yankees - which is odd because we never went to Burger King!
<< <i>I was looking for any Yankee star. Not just any Yankee, per se. Fred Stanley didn't do it for me. Munson, Nettles, Reggie. But, man, Guidry was having some year that summer of '78. I remember he started out like 13-0. >>

Did anybody on his team ever hit the ball at all?

I always look at Nolan Ryan in '72 when he went 19-16 with a 2.28 ERA. He had 9 shutouts that season, otherwise he's likely a sub .500 pitcher that year. Amazing how bad his offense was.
I finished the 78 racks. Should receive them next week. I will share the results on your thread. Good luck to us both.
Thanks,

<< <i>In 1987 in a high offensive year , Nolan Ryan who led the league with a 2.76 ERA , had an ( 8-16 ) record . ----- Sonny >>
It is possible I am wrong, but I remember hearing Steve Stone announce that Ryan won the Consort (hairspray for men) Control Pitcher of the Year Award. He and Harry Carey went on to discuss how a season that good could result in a record of 8 and 16.
First rack had an O/C Bench, Parker and Jackson RB - and, of course, badly o/c Jackson Todd. But there were some beauts:
More ripping to come!
Classic Molitor/Trammell RC...as in O/C and smudged
Love this Rose!
Seaver a bit o/c
Mitchell Page was one of my favorite players growing up...not sure why
Brett has nice centering but that print crud on top
There are others nicely centered. Overall, either 1978 has better centering than other years or these are some good racks!
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

Surfaces appear nice but will definitely scour before submitting.
Ripped packs 4 and 5. Centering remains surprisingly good. The rack definitely helps keeps the corners nice and sharp. I was kind of shocked that there are a few '78s that I don't remember at all. I thought I was the 1978 expert (when I was eight, at least).
No recollection.
A much better Molitor/Trammell RC. Centering not perfect but I love it!
Don't remember this card at all!
A very nice Carter!
Another good thing about racks is that you don't have to worry about gum or wax cards. Those darn '81 grocery racks have gum though!

BBG - you should have told me that before I started flipping them like it was 1978 again!
A few of the sharper cards from the sixth and last rack:
Always hated this one. All the other Rookie Star cards had breakout players of one sort or another. Even Miguel Dilone got hot for a second.
A very nice and difficult card!
So six racks and no Murrays or Ryans. Not even one triple-print Rose. But a satisfying rip nonetheless!
One final note: I got 5 Keith Hernandez - all O/C. One cell had 2 Hernandez in a row!
I really love that second Molly, no ink smudge and the centering is only a little off. Good game, nice hustle!

David (LD_Ferg)

Good luck on future subs.
I was just looking over at BBCEx and noticed they have 79T vending @ $250. Wow - that would put a case at 6K!
Here are some potential "to grade" examples from the 1st rack.
I only purchased 3 racks. I'll rip the others shortly.

The slightest bit of corner fuzz will get you an 8 for sure (on an otherwise flawless card).
The 1981 Montanez PSA 9 is a big one but a 10 would have been great. There is only one 9 (now two) and zero 10s.
No loupe used and really one's grading skills are only as good as their material. Those six 1978 racks were special. In contrast, I opened 12 1981 racks and only found the two Mariners Future Stars and Riok Waits suitable for grading.
