1978 Topps Rack Rip - Uodate - POPPAGE!

Should be getting some 1978 Topps Baseball Rack Packs from BBCE early next week. Am so ready to rip and post that I am already setting up the thread.

1978 was the first year I really bought cards in bulk. I remember nearly pummeling a friend because he grabbed the rack with Ron Guidry on top before I could! We got kicked out of Newberry's for that.

LOL. I remember my classmate lived near the school and was the only one allowed to walk home for lunch. A bunch of us would give him our lunch money so he could stop by the five and dime store to buy 1978 racks for us. For me, Dave Parker was the card I sought after that year.

I was looking for any Yankee star. Not just any Yankee, per se. Fred Stanley didn't do it for me. Munson, Nettles, Reggie. But, man, Guidry was having some year that summer of '78. I remember he started out like 13-0.

For some reason, I have a ton of '78 Burger King Yankees - which is odd because we never went to Burger King!

What's even more impressive is when you look at his ERA for the year and then look at the top 10 in the AL that year:

    1 Guidry 25 3 1.74
    2 Matlack 15 13 2.27
    3 Caldwell 22 9 2.36
    4 Palmer 21 12 2.46
    5 Goltz 15 10 2.49
    6 Gura 16 4 2.72
    7 Eckersley 20 8 2.99
    8 Figueroa 20 9 2.99
    9 Zahn 14 14 3.03
    10 Jenkins 18 8 3.04

I always look at Nolan Ryan in '72 when he went 19-16 with a 2.28 ERA. He had 9 shutouts that season, otherwise he's likely a sub .500 pitcher that year. Amazing how bad his offense was.

I recall Wilbur Wood and Phil Niekro having 20-20 seasons with decent ERAs. I only knew this by poring over the backs of these '78 Topps cards.

It is possible I am wrong, but I remember hearing Steve Stone announce that Ryan won the Consort (hairspray for men) Control Pitcher of the Year Award. He and Harry Carey went on to discuss how a season that good could result in a record of 8 and 16.

There are others nicely centered. Overall, either 1978 has better centering than other years or these are some good racks!

Some really nice cards overall! If the Rose RB were centered a smidge to the right, it would be possible gem mint. The Brett looks sharp, too!

George Hendrick was ahead of his time lol.

Surfaces appear nice but will definitely scour before submitting.

Ripped packs 4 and 5. Centering remains surprisingly good. The rack definitely helps keeps the corners nice and sharp. I was kind of shocked that there are a few '78s that I don't remember at all. I thought I was the 1978 expert (when I was eight, at least).

Looking forward to your scans David. This was a pretty nice batch of racks. I wonder if they all came from the same case.

BBG - you should have told me that before I started flipping them like it was 1978 again!

A few of the sharper cards from the sixth and last rack:

A very nice and difficult card!

So six racks and no Murrays or Ryans. Not even one triple-print Rose. But a satisfying rip nonetheless!

One final note: I got 5 Keith Hernandez - all O/C. One cell had 2 Hernandez in a row!

Boy, there is another beautiful McCovey!

Judging by the Bill Travers you and I pulled, I can see why there are like 50 10s out there.

Grades popped on the 1978s (along with some various and sundry items). Am pleased but really wanted 10s on both the '78 and '81 Montanez. You can't win them all.

Nice going Chris. Glad you'll see a nice return on your 1978 rack pack investment.

Great poppage! I've not sent in my 78s but based on the recent sales, I should have. Good luck with whatever you decide to do with them.

    Thanks,

Thanks guys! A bunch of those 9s should definitely be 10s. The 8s I can understand. This was my first sub where I got all 8s and above. So that is great!

The slightest bit of corner fuzz will get you an 8 for sure (on an otherwise flawless card).

The 1981 Montanez PSA 9 is a big one but a 10 would have been great. There is only one 9 (now two) and zero 10s.

No loupe used and really one's grading skills are only as good as their material. Those six 1978 racks were special. In contrast, I opened 12 1981 racks and only found the two Mariners Future Stars and Riok Waits suitable for grading.
