How often do you "relax" with your favorite cards?

New poster here. Have trolled the board many times...thanks to all with your fantastic insights to the hobby. I've done research here many times.

Anyway, how often do you pull out your favorite collection, with a glass of wine or beer, and examine each card from top to bottom?

Double check/triple check that the slab isn't a fake, you're 100% happy with the card's quality, marvel at the brilliant colors and sharp edges.

LOL! Can anyone relate to this? I swear I have issues at times. My answer is about every one and a half weeks.

Thanks in advance to all that respond.
Erick

    First, welcome to the boards.

Second, I'm getting cracked up thinking about a grown man with a glass of wine, lusting after his collection from top to bottom. I've never done that, but I'm considering it. Maybe I could end up on My Strange Addiction!

    Welcome to the universe!

I actually looked at my collection earlier today. Im with you Erick, at times I have my "issues" and would like to look at my growing collection more than I do, but I probably check out my collection once or twice a month. I recently bought a loupe to inspect my cards (graded and raw) because of a recent thread I saw here on the boards, so I'll probably be looking at my cards even more as I have a few graded cards that may be bumpable.
  • Welcome to the boards, emar! Great first post! I'm sure we all do this with our favorite cards sometimes. For me, it's probably about every two weeks that I take at out my nicest and favorite cards- my Marino RC, Favre 92 Stadium Club, 67 Mantle and the (way too) cheap non-sports cards that I enjoy collecting.

    Once and a while.

I think I spend more time with my collection spreadsheets and want-lists than I do with my actual collection. image

I have my personal collection in the same room as my sales inventory. Often times when I go in there to get an item that sold, I will hang out for a while and look at the items I have displayed or plop down on the floor and go through a couple albums. I am on a self imposed buying hiatus for the moment and trying to spend more time with what I have and less time chasing things I don't. Otherwise, I can get so focused on trying to complete sets I am working on that I never appreciate all those I have already completed and it begins to feel more like work than a hobby.

    Hiya Erick

    Welcome!

I - also - was kind of on/off - have been "on" since 1989 - almost 25 years - don't know where the time has gone?

Lately - I spend my time looking at my baseball board games - I'm setting up a repair center to work on some of them - I'm looking into paper repair to get a better handle on piecing box lids together.

I do about once a month look at the auto cards I've pulled or purchased over the years - like to look at them.

Looking forward to your posts - don't be a stranger.

I keep high resolution scans of all of my favorite cards on my smartphone. I can look at them wherever and whenever I want.

  • I look at them about 2 times a month, depending on mood (more if I'm stressed). It's relaxing, and enjoying. I'd like to buy some graded card displays so I can see them more often. Ive been trying to scan them all in the past 6 months (I'm halfway from about 2000 PSA cards)

It's strange, I usually only buy cards after a bottle of wine, I prefer Shafer or Ojai, and come to think of it I almost always look at my cards at that time too. I have a lot of cards . . . cheers!
  • I check my cards selling prices on VCP about everyday. As far as looking at them - I'd say more often than not. Its nice to know that I have a little semi valuable stash that If I ever really needed the money, I know I can sell them - not that I have any intention to right now. When I do pull out my graded cards (I keep them in one of those graded card shoeboxes) - I just usually go on ebay and do a searches on each one and check to see the most recent selling prices due to VCP's inability to capture everything. Scans are nice but its great to see a card that sold on ebay for $300 and know that your holding that same card in your hand. That also gives me a chance to appreciate my cards a little more.

Great responses and cheers! My thanks to the welcoming committee! Glad to hear I'm not the only one with strange addictions.

Hobby vs investment??? Both!! We aren't overly disappointed when a card plummets in value. However, Vintage has seen strong returns in the last 3-5 years.
I use VCP too but mainly track (on a spreadsheet) the last 5 completed ebay auctions....gives me an average realized price, hence the card's current value.

My original post was to express the pride a person feels, while sifting through our collectibles, towards the hard work and achievements we were able to accomplish.

my cards are all in a different country, so does looking at ebay confirmation emails with a jam Carmenere in hand count?

nice to see some wine heads on the boards, btw

no wine, no beer. not my style.

however, a nicely prepared tropical beverage spiked with rum makes everything look brilliant.

    Nice room!

I gotta admit, I'm a registry addict. More for the reason that I can upload a picture of the card and have the actual card rest safely in a safe deposit box in a bank down the road. Whenever I purchase something over a certain price range, I pay my other cards a visit and bring the new one. Recently, I've begun to run out of room in the box and had to bring some of the "lower end" ones home. Those go on a display case which is also running out of room. So, I either need to get a new display case or upgrade my safe deposit box.
I'm building a 1968 and a 1970 Topps set. I have lots of 1970s and 1960s to offer in trade.
  • I relax with my favorite cards each weekend, usually Friday night. Gently, I prop them up against untarnished sponges in front of a lavender scented candle. The extra light helps me see the tamper free seals on the holders and it also highlights the chipless borders. I then slip into my favorite pantaloons, grab some rum, and put "Careless Whisper"on repeat mode.

    Ahh paradise!

I work from home and my office has shelves with all of my PSA stuff on them. I guess I look at them daily...hourly...minutely....

I always have ambitions to keep boxes sealed that I buy from BBCE. It usually lasts for about 2-3 months, then my wife will go out with her friends for an evening and I'll grab a couple beers and rip one or two boxes. Of course, I have immediate regret, but then I spend the next couple of days inspecting each card....reading stats, info, etc. and I feel much better.
