Where to sell some older cards

First time poster here. Forgive me if this has been covered, probably many times before. I have a few older cards with fairly high grades plus a lot of low to midrange stars and commons, most of which I haven't had graded or authenticated yet. Having never sold on eBay before, I'm sure buyers wouldn't be as interested in dealing with me, plus I'm worried about being scammed. It seems that the best way to go would be to use a reputable auction house. Is there a good way to compare the various auction sites and pick them? Any insight greatly appreciated.

Older cards?? as in when?? 1880s?? 1980s???

Alot of where to sell the cards will depend on the year and brand of the card!

  • send the cards to me. I'll take a look at them and decide where you should sell them.

In seriousness, eBay is a pretty safe place to sell. You just have to make sure to take the steps to cover yourself as a seller (signature confirmation and/or insurance on expensive sales). There is a Buy/Sell/Trade board on here, and everyone who participates in sales and trades seem to be stand-up, good people from what I've seen.

  • Thanks guys for the very quick replies. Of course I should have given you more info but I posted too hastily. The top ones I have are a 1935 national chicle bull tosi PSA 6.5 and a 1940 play ball shoeless joe Jackson PSA 7. I think I have something else in that range but I don't remember and my spreadsheet isn't handy. Most of what I have are poor-good national chicles (the entire set except Rockne) and 39 and 40 play balls.

Another question: I have a Bronko nagurski national chicle as well which received a PSA 1 but I and a couple of local card shop guys thought it was underrated. Should I resubmit it? Sorry if this seems ridiculous; I'm really just not familiar with the process.

I gotta admit, I was not expecting you to come back with a list of cards like that.....
I'm building a 1968 and a 1970 Topps set. I have lots of 1970s and 1960s to offer in trade.

Welcome to the boards! I am not sure why so many people around here greet every question with such sarcasm.

You have some great cards. How long ago was the Nagurski graded? If it was graded more than a few years ago, it is worth a try to resubmit. Especially if it was graded before they introduced half grades, you may have a shot.

If you are aware of the values of the cards and the amount you would like to get for them, you could list on eBay with a Buyitnow price, and not sell unless it is met.

Of course, you could also list it here with a sales price and some scans and you would likely get some strong offers.

I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!

The Chicle set would garner a nice prices ever in PSA2-3 range. The Tosi is a $3000 card alone. Do you have scans of the cards that you could post here? The National is coming to Chicago and you could really gather some interest for a full Chicle set if you would be willing to down grade your Tosi and use some of the funds for a Rockne. The way to sell that set as a whole is all in similar grade. PSA2-3 set or PSA3-4. Having a bunch of 1's and 2's and then the Tosi 6 is going to scare the set collector off.

  • Thanks very much for the great advice and feedback. In the hobby world I inhabit (frequent flyer boards), there is far more snarkiness and useless sarcasm, so I take no offense!

All these cards were my dad's, and he professes no emotional attachment to them. It is pretty cool though to have stuff that he collected as a kid. I will post some scans when I have a chance.

You have some great cards. Sell them on ebay. Are most of your cards graded?

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Welcome, I have been collecting the National Chicle set for a while. Southsider's 1935 National Chicles
The Tosi is a tough, tough card. I agree that a PSA 6.5 Tosi is at least $3000, possibly approaching $4000+ if it's a real stunner. There are a lot of fakes/reprints of the National Chicles, so even low grade cards are worth having graded for the bigs - HOFers plus any of the high numbers. It may be worth getting the Nagurski reviewed, if you could post a scan we'd be able to give you more opinions on that.

I agree with you that you may have a hard time selling your set on ebay if you are a new seller. Many new sellers on ebay selling the National Chicle fakes/reprints, so another new seller with a collection like yours would be suspicious to some people and could cost you some bidders. There are a couple of ebay consigners that members here use pretty regularly to sell items on ebay - Brent at PWCC Auctions and Rick Probstein (probstein123 on ebay). I have not used either, so I have no recommendation either way, but there have been many posts on the boards debating the topic.

Good luck and hope you are able to post some scans of your collection for us to see.

Hi, hello, how are ya? image

I've had Rick Probstein sell for me and was happy with his service and promptness in sending funds. I've not used PWCC but the gentleman has a fine reputation for his services as well. My perspective is PWCC is the place to sell high grade expensive cards. Probstein will sell your high grade cards as well as your mid and lower grade cards.

Consign them with Probstein or PWCC
  • Again, thank you for all the advice. I will contact Probstein and PWCC to find out more. Here are a few scans of the Tosi, Jackson, and Nagurski (which looking more closely at it, probably deserved its low rating), which were all PSA-rated. I also have a scan of the Turk Edwards, which is probably in the best condition of the rest of the set.

  • OK, please forgive a newbie's ignorance, but how do I attach the scans of my cards? I'm using a MacBook. Thanks.

    very nice.
  • Great cards!

COMC isn't the best for vintage cards. I'd say putting them on ebay with a BIN/BO would be your best bet, or maybe an auction house or in person at a show.
  • Hello again,

Sorry for being such a stranger to posting. I've been lurking, but haven't found much to add to existing discussions, so I've kept quiet. I do really enjoy learning from everyone here, as I am such a complete noob in the hobby.

I did have a question about the Nagurski I posted about a few months ago, and thought that rather than open a new thread, I would just ask on this one. PSA graded it a 1, probably due to a couple of creases in it, but the card looks like may be in better shape than poor (although again, as a total amateur, I may be totally naive on this). Does it make sense to resubmit it to PSA, and try and get a higher grade? I guess I'm asking based on whether you guys think it could grade better, and also whether getting a slightly higher grade would increase its value.

Thanks so much, and sorry if this is just a stupid question.
  • I am guessing there is a small paper loss somewhere which makes it an automatic PSA 1. On that card, a PSA 2 may double the value. You may want to try sending it to SGC. I would keep it in the holder.

I have a top collection of 1935 chicle on the PSA registry and that Tosi is straight put unreal. Extremely tough card

Is that a pinhole in Nagurski's right forearm? That spot seems to correspond to the black mark in the "m" in "times" on the back.

If so, it would probably still get a 1 at SGC.

Still, it is a nice looking card!

    Steve
  • Thanks guys for the responses. I don't see any paper loss with the naked eye, just fuzzy corners and a couple of creases down Bronko's face and jersey.

As for the pinhole, that's a very interesting possibility. I don't remember looking for that when it was raw, and it's really hard to tell in its slab if it's a hole or just a spot like on the left arm. It does correspond exactly to the splotch on the back of the card though. I should probably get a loupe to look at it more closely; if it isn't a hole, I may break it out and resubmit it. Regardless, I need to send in a few more of the '35 Chicles that are in decent shape.

    Edited to add:

So I looked at the card really closely at 10X magnification, and it's really hard to see that spot as a whole. Under magnification, it looks like the world's smallest cigarette burn, though. So I'm still not sure whether to crack it. Decisions, decisions....
  • Just to continue in this vein, I guess the three little gouges on the right side of this Williams were enough to kill its grade as well.

  • Well, after studying my Nagurski card very closely with a 10x loupe, it doesn't look like the spot on the arm is a pinhole, but it's really hard to tell without cracking it out. Maybe I'm naive, but I'm going to crack it out and resubmit it and go for a higher grade- I think the card looks at least as good as the 2 that just went up on ebay (link below), especially given its centering. Wish me luck!

Best way to check if it is a pin hold. Go into a room with a mirror with a flash light. Turn our the lights. Shine the flashlight on the back of the card while facing the mirror. If you see a pin point of light, it is a hole.
  • I could help you move the CHicles and maybe the Jackson. PM me here.

    Jason
  • What a great idea- thanks so much. I tried it and no hole revealed itself. I just wish that psa would give some guidance as to why it got the grade it got.

Honestly for a card of that value I would submit it a couple more times before giving up.
