Share your 80's Baseball Pre-Rookies

Looking for cards that came out before their recognized rookie cards. Not minor league or USA cards.
I got this one in the mail today, and am curious what ones other people have.

  • That's not a minor league card?
  • The Cubs had a regional set out in 1983 sponsored by Thorn Apple Valley. Joe Carter's first card is in this set, predating Donruss by a year.

Craig Lefferts, a popular reliever for the Giants back in the late 80s had his pre-rookie in the 83 Thorn Apple Cubs set.

    Here's a few others:

1984 Dodgers Police Orel Hershisher (RC year 1985)

1980 Giants Police Al Holland (RC year 1981)

The Cubs had a number of these types of sets with Sandberg having a card in 1982 Red Lobster set that was issued by the team and predated the normal Topps, Fleer and Donruss rookies by a year. There are a few on Ebay...look them up. I wish I still had mine!
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

Here is a favorite, 1982 Red Lobster Ryne Sandberg:

    image

Kind of cool as it shows him playing his original MLB position, third base.

That Sandberg is a fantastic looking card. I always love cards that show the player in an ACTUAL MLB game instead of a photo from spring training, which is more prevelant for the period. Here, you can see Wrigley in the background. Just a great looking card.

The Carter in a PSA 9 has sold for $5 twice recently on eBay...

The Sandberg in a 10 recently sold for $670

I have a couple 1983 Apple Thorn Joe Carter cards that have a shot at a 10....the Sandberg and Team Card both landed in 10's, so I will take a closer look.

The Sandberg Red Lobster card was hard to find in a 10 until fairly recently....in addition to the $600+ sale, I have seen them for $500-575 as well. Mine was a self sub, from a raw ebay sealed set purchase...$25, so not bad. POP 10 I believe.

    Good thread.

Technically not a 'pre-rookie' but a pretty cool 'card that never was'. Card is from Baseball Cards magazine from 1987.

I like "what if" cards as much as the next guy, but they got a major detail wrong: Mattingly didn't wear jersey #23 until 1984. He wore #46 as a rookie in 1982 and 1983.
