Older Topps Cello packs

I've come across an issue I haven't fully encountered yet.

I bought a 81, 82, and 85 Topps baseball cello box last week on ebay from the same seller. The prices were very good....significant discount off what others are selling for.

The packs are sealed properly and do not appear searched. There are a few semi stars, AS, and even a HOF player on the top of the packs.

The 85 box is completely correct. There is no issue whatsoever.

But the 81 and 82 box....theres a lot of gum dust. I'd say its in about half the packs in each box. The gum is broken in several of the packs and seems quite hard/brittle. I'm thinking this is just from the way it was stored by the seller. I have experienced this issue before. In the 1975 mini packs I got from the last group BBCE break, there was a very dry brittle piece of gum that was loose(ie no gum sticking to cards and no gum stain) and a large amount of gum "dust" throughout the package and all over the cards. Its stuff that brushed away and really wasn't any issue of consequence. It doesn't particularly make sense that 1981 packs were ever opened and resealed as there was never at any point a high dollar card in that year. I don't think any of the rookies every pushed past $6 or so at any point and maybe only the Henderson 2nd year even went up as high as $10.

Just wanted to make sure this is correct for these early 80's cello packs. The "dust" is present throughout the packs where it exists.

Another issue I noticed is that in about 7-8 of the packs, the top card has a huge nick on the side of the card, maybe about 1/2 " long. This seems to also be a common Topps factory issue as I've opened quite a few rack packs where this issue also existed. But I'd never seen it on a cello pack before. This was only in the 1981 and 1982 cello box, not the 1985.

I think the packs are fine. I remember buying cello packs in 1981 and 1982 that had the gum dust everywhere. I think it was the kind of gum they used those years.

Also, I have seen cards with the small nick on the side from cello packs back in the early 1980's.

So I do beleive the packs are fine. However, you can never tell if the box was searched for stars on top like a Ripken rookie or a second year Henderson and replaced.

Excessive gum powder is common for cellos from this era and is actually a good sign. It is also not uncommon to encounter machine (loading) marks on the left edge of the top card of the cello, similar to the loading mark you'll see on the top or bottom edge you'll see on top cards in rack packs.
