Apologies if this has been posted before, but a quck check shows it has not.
This is from grantland.com 30 0n 30 series. This 15 minute episode deals with "the" Honus Wagner (Gretsky card) that is now thought to have been trimmed. Very interesting and very quick watch.

How can Olbermann be so smug and so sure about the card being trimmed? "It's impossible for a card that old to have edges that nice"
Well, there are 1700 other PSA 8's, 187 PSA 9's and eve 8 PSA 10's from that same set. Were they all trimmed?

The Black Swamp find recently came back with some 10's as well. But there must be a better rationale than age alone to believe it was trimmed.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
It's my understanding that the card being trimmed has been common knowledge amongst pre-war collectors for years. And I'm not talking about a group of cigar-smoking old timers sitting around the backroom of a Kansas City deli.

Say what you will about N54, but there's certainly a great deal of knowledge there when it comes to T206s. And while you're saying what you will about N54, keep in mind that they like to argue over there like a wet fart likes to stink. You'll notice that in the barely three pages of responses it elicited, not a one was in regard to whether or not there was a question as to the trimming of the card.
Now, I certainly wasn't in the room when the card was graded and have zero direct knowledge of whether or not Illinois' favorite defendant likes a good buzz cut, but if the squadron of seething contestants of "Who Wants To Disagree With Me?" over at N54 can collectively come to terms on something, then there's probably something to it.
